Film Review: ‘Assassin’s Creed’ Has Odd Breeding for a Movie
Submitted by PatrickMcD on December 26, 2016 - 5:34pmCHICAGO – I’m not a gamer, but of course I’ve heard about “Assassin’s Creed.” The film based on the video game is a wild and undisciplined attempt to expand that particular universe, but does succeed in creating an oddball science fiction that has implications in geo-religious power and control.
Film Review: ‘Even the Rain’ Takes Preachy Approach to Powerful Story
Submitted by mattmovieman on February 25, 2011 - 9:01amCHICAGO – Actress-turned-filmmaker Icíar Bollaín has an important story to tell in her fifth directorial feature, “Even the Rain.” The film is drenched in self-importance, nearly all of it justifiable. Historical events are eerily and poignantly re-enacted against a fascinating modern backdrop, drawing parallels between past and present corruption. It’s regrettable that this great idea was given such a workmanlike execution.
