Blu-Ray Review: Akira Kurosawa’s Riveting Thriller ‘High and Low’

High and Low

CHICAGO – Very few films from 1963 have the timelessness of Akira Kurosawa’s perfect thriller “High and Low,” a daring piece of tension-building work that takes place almost entirely in one room and in real-time. With people like Martin Scorsese, Mike Nichols, and David Mamet circling a potential remake for years, it’s no wonder the film was chosen for the Blu-ray upgrade this month by Criterion. It’s a classic from one of the form’s best directors.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘People on Sunday’ Foreshadows Independent Cinema

People on Sunday Blu-Ray

CHICAGO – One of the most important home entertainment releases of the year is Criterion’s high-definition restoration of Robert Siodmak and Edgar G. Ulmer’s “People on Sunday,” an extraordinary filmic landmark from 1930 that is a must-see for any self-respecting cinephile. Watching it for the first time, I felt like I was witnessing nothing less than the birth of independent cinema.

DVD Review: Jonathan Demme’s Brilliant ‘Something Wild’ Joins Criterion

Something Wild

CHICAGO – I love Jonathan Demme’s “Something Wild” with such passion that I can recommend the new Criterion Collection edition of the underrated ’80s classic and yet still realize that it’s something of a disappointment. Criterion leads the way in Blu-ray and DVD in every way, but even they can release editions that seem a bit lackluster, and such is the case with “Something Wild.” Pick it up because the movie rules, but don’t get your hopes too high.

Blu-Ray Review: Awesome Criterion Edition of ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas’

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas

CHICAGO – I have a love-hate relationship with Terry Gilliam’s “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” but it’s a lot easier to fall on the former side of that dynamic with the simply amazing Criterion Collection release of the Johnny Depp & Benicio Del Toro drug epic, recently released on Blu-ray. With a stunning transfer enhanced by some of the best special features of the year to date, this is the kind of Blu-ray release that makes the actual movie better.

Blu-Ray Review: Criterion Collection Inducts Taiwanese Masterpiece ‘Yi Yi’

Yi Yi

CHICAGO – Taiwan has an interesting cinematic history, as outlined in the strong interview with Asian-cinema critic Tony Rayns on the recently-released Blu-ray of Edward Yang’s “Yi Yi (A One and a Two…).” The country didn’t really have a film industry until the ’50s and then it was purely propaganda for the next several decades as China tried to win over the hearts of the residents after taking over from Japan. Consequently, the films of Taiwan have an interesting perspective on history and arguably the best film in the nation’s entire existence captures that perspective in the beloved “Yi Yi.”

Blu-Ray Review: ‘The Secret of the Grain’ Frames Life in Close-Up

The Secret of the Grain Blu-Ray

CHICAGO – Not to be confused with “The Secret in Their Eyes,” “The Secret of Kells,” or “The Secret,” this French family drama is saddled with a most unfortunate title for its American release. Though the picture’s original title, “The Grain and the Mullet,” may not sound like an upgrade, it offered an intriguing metaphor for the film’s unlikely union of two unforgettable characters.

Blu-Ray Review: Criterion’s ‘Everlasting Moments’ Has Timeless Power

Everlasting Moments

CHICAGO – Jan Troell’s “Everlasting Moments” is a beautiful film; a perfect fit for Criterion’s Blu-ray line in that it’s the kind of work that both could easily slip under the radar of movie history and not be granted the HD treatment that it deserves. There’s been some controversy over Criterion’s arrangement with IFC Films that has allowed some recent questionable inductions into the most esteemed collection in film preservation but I’m here to defend the inclusion of “Everlasting Moments.”

Blu-Ray Review: Visionary ‘Red Desert’ Joins Criterion Collection

Red Desert

CHICAGO – The Criterion Collection recently inducted the great Michelangelo Antonioni’s first color film into their esteemed catalog with a Blu-ray transfer that stands next to the best HD pictures of the year to date. This striking visual composition has never looked better and the film remains as mesmerizing as it was almost a half-century ago, arguably more so.

Blu-Ray Review: Fritz Lang’s ‘M’ Has Lost None of Its Power

M

CHICAGO – When does a great film become less powerful? We’ve all seen movies that worked wonderfully for us at one point in our lives and had less impact when we saw them again a decade or two later. The movies that not only remain powerful but, in some ways, improve upon repeat viewing are rare. They’re the true classics. Fritz Lang’s “M,” recently released on Criterion Blu-ray, is one such movie.

Blu-Ray Review: Criterion’s Ravishing, Gorgeous ‘Lola Montes’

Lola Montes

CHICAGO – When Max Ophuls’s “Lola Montes” was released in theaters in France in December of 1955, it caused an international scandal. Much to the dismay of its director, the producers of the film mangled it, pulling and going to town in the editing bay like a bull in a china shop. They cut out some scenes, translated German dialogue into French, remixed the sound, and even re-edited the film’s chronology.
