CHICAGO – There is no better time to take in a stage play that is based in U.S. history, depicting the battle between fact and religion. The old theater chestnut – first mounted in 1955 – is “Inherit the Wind,” now at the Goodman Theatre, completing it’s short run through October 20th. For tickets and more information, click INHERIT.
Golden Globe Telecast Canceled; Awards Become Highest-Profile Casualty of Writer’s Strike
CHICAGO – The organizers of the 2008 Golden Globe Awards on Monday announced the cancellation of its telecast. The move earned the title of the highest-profile casualty of the writer’s strike.
Following last week’s declaration to protest the event in defense of striking WGA writers, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) and NBC on Monday said the typically high-profile telecast will be substituted with a mere press conference. The HFPA on Monday issued the following statement in explanation:

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association [on Monday] announced that the recipients of Golden Globe Awards in 25 categories will be revealed during an hour-long HFPA press conference at the Beverly Hilton to be covered live by NBC News beginning at 6 pm PST on Jan. 13.
The 65th-annual Golden Globe Awards NBC telecast and champagne dinner in the Beverly Hilton’s international ballroom is officially cancelled.
“We are all very disappointed that our traditional awards ceremony will not take place this year and that millions of viewers worldwide will be deprived of seeing many of their favorite stars celebrating 2007’s outstanding achievements in motion pictures and television,” said HFPA President Jorge Camara.
“We take some comfort, however, in knowing that this year’s Golden Globe Award recipients will be announced on the date originally scheduled.”

The Daily Show and Colbert
The Daily Show and Colbert came back tonight. Wow. It’s going to be rough for all the late night talk shows in about a week’s time.
Individual deals vs. the collective
We keep seeing all these individual deals being struck. The point of a union is to look out for the collective and bring everything back together. So far, that’s not happening and it’s becoming everyone for themselves.
Awards Season Going Away
The writers strike effecting the Golden Globes (which is probably the 2nd most anticipated awards show after the Oscars, sorry Grammy fans) was huge. What about the Oscars? That is a holiday at Hank’s house.
I don’t blame individual companies for cutting deals. I’m sure there are some that realize without compensating writers the product suffers. It seems the larger force is standing strong against their profits and don’t want to share new technology booty. Get it done!
As Bill Clinton said during the baseball strike, “why can’t 800 people find a way to share a billion dollars?”
