Film Review: ‘Peppermint’ Offers Nothing New in Revenge Genre
Submitted by PatrickMcD on September 10, 2018 - 5:11pmCHICAGO – When a revenge film gets a bit stale, as they tend to do, the best way to pass the time is to start counting how many people are indiscriminately killed. “Peppermint,” which has the former “Alias” star Jennifer Garner going back to an action mode, had 36 (give or take) quality kills, with the last one taking the longest between executions.
Film Review: ‘10 Cloverfield Lane’ is a Dull Detour to a Dead End
Submitted by PatrickMcD on March 11, 2016 - 10:34pmCHICAGO – With “10 Cloverfield Lane,” Producer J.J. Abrams attempts a classic bait and switch on his audience. The name and the tagline suggest a connection to Abrams found footage monster movie, 2008’s “Cloverfield.” But in all honesty, this film has very little to do with the events of that movie.
Blu-ray Review: Don’t Miss Remarkable Honesty of ‘Short Term 12’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 14, 2014 - 7:47pm“Short Term 12” is a special film. If through some true miracle, Brie Larson’s name is announced on Oscar nominations morning, that sound you hear is me screaming in childish glee. She certainly deserves it for this daring, honest piece of work, one that dares to suggest that there are numerous ways to stop the emotional bleeding. It could be rap, it could be art, it could be taking a bat to a car, or it could be love. Destin Cretton won the Chicago Film Critics Association Award for Most Promising Filmmaker and it was one of this year’s winners of which I was most proud we were recognizing. This is a special movie.
Film Review: ‘Short Term 12’ is an Honest, Emotional Gem
Submitted by BrianTT on September 13, 2013 - 12:03pmCHICAGO – There are certain jobs that I know that I could not do not because of the physical requirements but the emotional baggage I would take home with me at the end of the day. The brilliant, moving “Short Term 12” captures one of these jobs – people who look out for abandoned kids, many of them abused, addicted, and troubled the point of pure heartbreak.
TV Review: HBO’s ‘The Newsroom’ Adjusts Its Broadcast Style
Submitted by BrianTT on July 14, 2013 - 10:47amCHICAGO – There’s no television program that can be more simultaneously brilliant and frustrating as Aaron Sorkin’s “The Newsroom,” returning tonight, July 14, 2013, to start an already-tumultuous second season.
