Blu-Ray Review: Latest Seasons of Showtime’s ‘Nurse Jackie,’ ‘Weeds’
Submitted by BrianTT on March 1, 2011 - 2:00pmCHICAGO – One of Showtime’s former best comedies and one of their current best both saw a season land on Blu-ray in the last few weeks and we’re here to give you the details. Lionsgate owns the rights to “Nurse Jackie” and “Weeds,” two of the more acclaimed cable programs on the air right now. Sadly, the once-brilliant “Weeds” is a shadow of its former self, but “Nurse Jackie” continues to deliver.
Blu-Ray Review: Tyler Perry Films Released in HD
Submitted by BrianTT on November 29, 2010 - 2:33pmCHICAGO – Some studios slowly roll their catalog films out to Blu-ray as directors or actors release new films with which to tie-in but Lionsgate has decided that holiday season 2010 is the time to import most of Tyler Perry’s films to the HD format just as his “For Colored Girls” is turning out to be a critical and commercial disappointment.
Blu-Ray Review: ‘Winter’s Bone’ Features Two of the Best Performances of 2010
Submitted by BrianTT on November 4, 2010 - 11:13amCHICAGO – Every year there’s a performance or two that truly heralds the arrival of an amazing new talent. Arguably the most impressive debut of 2010 belongs to Jennifer Lawrence, a nearly-guaranteed Oscar nominee for her searing performance in the devastating “Winter’s Bone,” recently released on Blu-ray and DVD on the eve of what is sure to be numerous year-end mentions and potential award nominations.
Blu-Ray Review: StudioCanal Editions of ‘Delicatessen,’ ‘The Third Man’
Submitted by BrianTT on September 16, 2010 - 12:55pmCHICAGO – What do Carol Reed’s beloved “The Third Man” and Jean-Pierre Jeunet & Marc Caro’s “Delicatessen” have in common? Almost nothing and yet I kind of love that they’re now linked in Lionsgate’s StudioCanal Collection because it illustrates the diversity of this increasingly-interesting wave of releases. They’ll never top The Criterion Collection, but it’s nice to have another series of timeless and modern classics making the Blu-ray market that much richer.
Blu-Ray Review: Katherine Heigl, Ashton Kutcher in Narcoleptic ‘Killers’
Submitted by BrianTT on September 16, 2010 - 9:28amCHICAGO – When “Killers” didn’t screen for critics, we assumed that it was because it was an insipid, horrid mess and that Lionsgate didn’t want to let audiences in on that fact before stealing their hard-earned cash. Watching it on Blu-ray, I was surprised that it didn’t screen because it’s not “Marmaduke”- or “Macgruber”-bad. It’s just shockingly boring.
Interview: Daniel Stamm Finds Devilish Inspiration in ‘The Last Exorcism’
Submitted by BrianTT on August 25, 2010 - 7:42pmCHICAGO – Daniel Stamm makes films that, to quote a character from his first drama, “Play with the boundaries of what is comfortable to document.” His first work was a dark character piece called “A Necessary Death” about a filmmaker’s efforts to film an actual suicide.
Blu-Ray Review: Spectacular Release For Matthew Vaughn’s ‘Kick-Ass’
Submitted by BrianTT on August 2, 2010 - 9:40amCHICAGO – Matthew Vaughn’s “Kick-Ass” didn’t take off in theaters like it deserved to do but a simply spectacular Blu-ray release from Lionsgate is sure to please both fans of this excellent slice of post-modern entertainment and help it find the wider audience that I’m sure it will on the home market.
