Film News: Cirque du Soleil to Perform at Oscars While Muppets Will Only Present

The Muppets

CHICAGO – In a move that I can only describe as head-scratching, the 84th Academy Awards producers Brian Grazer and Don Mischer have invited Cirque du Soleil to perform at this year’s Oscar ceremony. The decision is not head-scratching because Cirque du Soleil is a bad act, but because they have cancelled other performances that actually pertain completely to this year’s awards to make room for other parts of the telecast.

Blu-ray Review: Stunning Restoration of ‘Wings,’ First Best Picture Winner

Wings

CHICAGO – By today’s standards, “Wings” would be more expensive than any movie ever made. That’s what an undertaking this legendary film was for Paramount in the ’20s. The biggest studio in the world set out to make the biggest film in history, presenting viewers with things they had never seen before and pushing the boundaries of what was capable on celluloid. Sadly, “Wings” has somewhat become an answer to a trivia question and the remarkable quality of the film itself has been underappreciated by time. This glorious Blu-ray restoration should help fix that oversight.

Interview: Actor James Cromwell on Role in Oscar-Nominated ‘The Artist’

CHICAGO – The character actor has always been a fixture in Hollywood culture, and there are few as unique as James Cromwell. He’s had many memorable roles in films like “Babe,” “L.A. Confidential” and within the “Star Trek” legacy. Currently, he portrays Clifton in the Oscar-nominated “The Artist.”

Interview: Director Asghar Farhadi Puts Together ‘A Separation’

CHICAGO – One of the great surprises of today’s Oscar nominations was the Best Original Screenplay nod to writer/director Asghar Farhadi’s “A Separation.” It has already won the 2011 Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film, and also has been nominated for the same distinction at the upcoming Academy Awards.

CHICAGO – Another year, another bunch of people who call themselves Oscar pundits bitching and moaning. It wouldn’t be late January without it.

Film News: Nostalgia Rules as ‘The Artist,’ ‘Hugo’ Lead 84th Annual Academy Award Nominations

CHICAGO – Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo” became the most Oscar-nominated film of 2011 on Tuesday morning, leading the way with eleven nominations but followed closely by “The Artist” with ten nods.

Film Feature: Predictions For the 84th Annual Academy Award Nominations

CHICAGO – Another year, another Oscar season. Blah. As much as I love the Oscars, there’s something about this one that feels just a little different — a little more jaded, a little more apathetic, a little nonplussed. I think it has to do with two major factors:

Blu-ray Review: Rich, Brilliant Restoration of ‘My Fair Lady’

My Fair Lady

CHICAGO – One of the clear observations in re-connecting with the 1964 Oscar-winning Best Picture “My Fair Lady,” is that essentially it’s a timeless musical. It lives in a universe of George Bernard Shaw, adapted from his original play “Pygmalion,” and comes to life through the music and lyrics of Frederick Loewe and Alan Jay Lerner.

Film News: Billy Crystal Takes Over as Oscar Host

Billy Crystal Oscars

CHICAGO – A day after Eddie Murphy dropped out as the host of the next Academy Awards Ceremony, Billy Crystal announced on his twitter that he would take over the hosting duties. Crystal will host the Oscars for the ninth time on February 26, 2012.

Film News: Eddie Murphy Drops Out as 2012 Oscar Host

Eddie Murphy Oscar Host

CHICAGO – A day after producer/director Brett Ratner was ousted from being the 2012 Academy Award show producer, 2012 host Eddie Murphy has decided he will no longer host the upcoming Oscar ceremony. The announcement came Wednesday afternoon as Murphy – who worked with Ratner on the recent feature release “Tower Heist” – decided he didn’t want to stay on as host without his friend and creative partner working with him.
