Video Game Review: Disappointing, Repetitive ‘Spider-Man: Edge of Time’
Submitted by BrianTT on November 2, 2011 - 7:57pmCHICAGO – As completely as “Batman: Arkham City” lived up to high expectations (and even surpassed them), Activision’s “Spider-Man: Edge of Time” has been such a disappointment that it’s actually taken me longer than normal to put it into words. Last year’s “Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions” was such an entertaining treat, the best webslinger game yet produced. All they had to do was build on the elements of that game that worked. Instead, they tore them down.
Video Game Review: ‘Dark Souls’ Promises Death, Doesn’t Disappoint
Submitted by BrianTT on November 1, 2011 - 4:25pmCHICAGO – Namco Bandai Games and From Software Inc. have teamed to bring you an adventure that warns right in the tagline “You Will Die,” and, trust us, you will. “Dark Souls,” the spiritual successor to “Demon’s Souls,” is a game that can easily be described as one of the most difficult adventures in the gaming world, but also a very rewarding one. It is not a game for the impatient or the easily bored. You must fight to get anywhere, and even then you will die several times.
Video Game Review: ‘Battlefield 3’ Sets New Bar For Multiplayer Shooters
Submitted by BrianTT on October 31, 2011 - 2:23pmCHICAGO – It takes some time to truly appreciate the accomplishments of the development team behind the multiplayer portion of the highly-anticipated “Battlefield 3.” At first, it’s total chaos. Running, explosions, buildings breaking, planes crashing, more running — in the moment, the multiplayer of “Battlefield 3” is such an adrenalin rush that it can be difficult to truly assess it critically. You’re too busy trying to not to get killed again.
Video Game Review: ‘The ICO & Shadow of the Colossus Collection’ Revives Timeless, Influential Titles
Submitted by BrianTT on October 25, 2011 - 3:36pmCHICAGO – Either you’re old enough to have played “ICO” and “Shadow of the Colossus,” two of the most influential video games of all time, or you’ve surely heard about them over the years that critics have been placing them on higher and higher pedestals. Do they live up the adoration that has been placed at their feet?
Video Game Review: ‘NBA 2K12’ Brings Sport Home During Lockout
Submitted by BrianTT on October 24, 2011 - 5:11pmCHICAGO – “NBA 2K12” is tough. And I mean that in the most complimentary way. I’m old enough to remember basketball games that were all about the timing of a button press but 2K Sports has revolutionized the way we simulate the game in the comfort of our own homes. The detailed controls along with the best audio/video presentation yet produced for this award-winning series make this a strong contender for the best sports game of the year.
Video Game Review: ‘Batman: Arkham City’ Soars Over Competition
Submitted by BrianTT on October 24, 2011 - 1:52pmCHICAGO – Rocksteady’s “Batman: Arkham City” is everything you’ve hoped it could be and everything you’ve read that it is and more. It is the best game to hit the market since “Red Dead Redemption” and a likely choice for 2011’s Game of the Year unless something miraculously tops it in the next two months.
Video Game Review: ‘Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One’ Expands Hit Franchise
Submitted by BrianTT on October 20, 2011 - 4:41pmCHICAGO – The world of “Ratchet & Clank” has always seemed like a perfect fit for co-operative play. It’s right there in the title. The award-winning games have long been about teamwork between their central characters and so turning them into a co-op family adventure probably seemed like a no-brainer.
Video Game Review: ‘NHL 12’ Continues Stellar Sports Franchise
Submitted by BrianTT on October 19, 2011 - 12:54pmCHICAGO – For years, there were competitions for the allegiance of certain sports fanatics. There were dozens of baseball games and there’s still a heated debate between the 2K fans and those loyal to “MLB The Show.” But when it comes to hockey, there’s no contest. No one else even grabs a puck. The world of simulated ice hockey belongs to EA and their latest conquest, “NHL 12,” proves why.
Video Game Review: Lackluster ‘X-Men: Destiny’ Has No Super Powers
Submitted by BrianTT on October 13, 2011 - 11:46amCHICAGO – Imagine this — an X-Men game in which you don’t play a known member of the legendary team. Want to rage with Wolverine’s claws, shoot beams with Cyclops’ eyes, or rain chaos with Storm? Well, you’ll have to go back to the last “Marvel Ultimate Alliance” game to do so because they’re not playable here.
Video Game Review: ‘Driver: San Francisco’ Offers New Twist on Racing Games
Submitted by BrianTT on October 12, 2011 - 12:28pmCHICAGO – How do you make an open-world racing game? “Burnout Paradise” made a reasonable effort by presenting a city in which stop lights led to races, but the developers of “Driver: San Francisco” take it a step further with one of the most unique driving game dynamics in the history of the subgenre. The result is an original twist on an old favorite that gives it a little bit of juice even if it can’t quite win the race.
