Film Review: Mesmerizing, Romantic Power of ‘Ain’t Them Bodies Saints’
Submitted by BrianTT on August 29, 2013 - 4:51pmCHICAGO – Is a film automatically flawed if we can see its influences? We don’t do it as quickly in music, in which it’s often incredibly easy to determine a new artist’s favorite bands as a kid. Authors that pull from a notable and recognizable literary history are often lauded for doing so.

Submitted by mattmovieman on August 27, 2013 - 12:21pmCHICAGO – Even if “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” hadn’t premiered this year, snagging two Sundance awards in the process, 2013 would still be considered a landmark year for David Lowery.
Blu-ray Review: Steven Soderbergh’s Brilliant Thriller ‘Side Effects’
Submitted by BrianTT on May 29, 2013 - 5:23amCHICAGO – Over a hundred films in and Steven Soderbergh’s “Side Effects” is still one of my favorite flicks of 2013. In fact, I’d say it’s the first great movie of the year released on Blu-ray and DVD. It underperformed at the box office but the star power on its cover is likely to make it a hit on the home market. Renters or buyers will be pleasantly surprised by a rewarding thriller from one our best working filmmakers.

2013 Sundance Diary, Day 3: Let’s Run Away From it All
Submitted by BrianTT on January 20, 2013 - 9:56pmPARK CITY, Utah – Film festivals naturally encourage those who write about them to look for themes. A few years ago it was the end of the world. This year, it seems to be the coming-of-age story (“Kill Your Darlings,” “The Spectacular Now,” “Mud,” “Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes,” “The Way, Way Back”) on the surface and the journey from home a little deeper.
DVD Review: David Fincher’s Incredible ‘The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’
Submitted by BrianTT on March 27, 2012 - 11:19amCHICAGO – David Fincher’s “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” is an absolute masterpiece, one of the best films of 2011 and one of the best thrillers of the new millennium. After I saw it in December of 2011, there was some question of its quality when compared to the original Stieg Larsson books, the Noomi Rapace-starring foreign version, and even Fincher’s previous work, the amazing “The Social Network.” Ignore all that comparison and just view “Dragon” on its own merits. It’s spectacular.
