TV Review: Michael Douglas, Matt Damon in ‘Behind the Candleabra’
Submitted by BrianTT on May 26, 2013 - 8:55amCHICAGO – It could have been so awful. Liberace was such an over-the-top character that capturing his most extreme behavior in the form of a TV movie could have been the kind of campy thing that deserves comparison to “Showgirls.”
Blu-ray Review: Wave of ‘Star Trek’ HD Releases Timed to ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’
Submitted by BrianTT on May 1, 2013 - 9:35amCHICAGO – It makes sense that Paramount would time releases of classic “Star Trek” televisions episodes in HD to coincide with the release of their sure-blockbuster “Star Trek Into Darkness” and so recent weeks have seen sets for “Star Trek: Enterprise: Season One,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation: Season Three,” and “Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Best of Both Worlds.” All three are worth a pick-up for Trekkies and are more than mere cash-ins. They’d be strong releases without the J.J. Abrams’ film on which to piggy back.
Slideshow: Galaxy of Stars at 2012 Wizard World Chicago Comic Con
Submitted by PatrickMcD on January 12, 2013 - 12:00pmCHICAGO – There are three characteristics that define the Wizard World Chicago Comic Con, held annually in Rosemont, Illinois – costumed participants, aisles of comic-related vendors and celebrity appearances. HollywoodChicago.com and photographer Joe Arce was there in August to capture Exclusive Portraits of those stars.
TV Review: Strong Cast Anchors Drama of ‘Men of a Certain Age’
Submitted by BrianTT on June 1, 2011 - 8:46amCHICAGO – TNT’s “Men of a Certain Age,” returning this week to finish out its second season with six episodes that the producers promise will be backed with character-driven drama, has quietly grown not just a loyal following but a reasonably strong critical foundation as well.
TV Review: Talented Stars Carry ‘Men of a Certain Age’
Submitted by BrianTT on December 6, 2010 - 10:55amCHICAGO – It has yet to approach the writing standards of the best television on the air right now but the stars of “Men of a Certain Age” continue to make it one of the more interesting programs on cable.
DVD Review: Ray Romano, Scott Bakula, Andre Braugher in ‘Men of a Certain Age’
Submitted by BrianTT on November 21, 2010 - 2:43pmCHICAGO – There’s a reason beyond simple truth-in-titling that I put the names of the three stars of TNT’s “Men of a Certain Age,” of which the first season was recently released on DVD, in the headline of this review — they’re the reason to watch. Created by Romano and Mike Royce, “Men of a Certain Age” is an imperfect program with at least one perfect performance (Emmy nominee Braugher) and two that sometimes come close. The “Men” of the title are excellent and if the program around them ever rises to their standard it could become one of the best on television.
Blu-Ray Review: Steven Soderbergh’s Excellent ‘The Informant!’ With Matt Damon
Submitted by BrianTT on February 23, 2010 - 11:07amCHICAGO – Steven Soderbergh is arguably the most important American filmmaker working today and his “The Informant!” with Matt Damon, just released on Blu-ray and DVD, is a great piece of evidence to support that argument. He continues to bring traditional stories to life in continuously unique, interesting ways.
TV Review: ‘Men of a Certain Age’ Promising But Off to Dull Start
Submitted by BrianTT on December 7, 2009 - 12:20pmCHICAGO – The mid-life crisis of the modern man is mostly about ego - as the body goes downhill and the role of the alpha male is supplanted by a new version of himself, men kind of fall apart as they realize that their peak has arguably passed. Why would such an individual experience make for intriguing drama? Using the mid-life crisis as a jumping off point for drama would require some seriously well-drawn characters, the kind of guys who you root to come to terms with passing over that hill. “Men of a Certain Age” does not yet have those characters.
Steven Soderbergh’s ‘The Informant!’ Puts Matt Damon on a Wire
Submitted by PatrickMcD on September 18, 2009 - 6:16amCHICAGO – Behind every great fortune lies a great crime, as the saying goes. In director Steven Soderbergh’s “The Informant!,” he and Matt Damon carve out a satire where the “crime” becomes entangled with the larger issues of “justice.”
