Film Review: ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ Pledges Allegiance to Strong Action, Twists
Submitted by NickHC on April 3, 2014 - 9:56pmCHICAGO – In record-breaking time, even for Marvel, a comic book character has had their existence (basically) rebooted. The arc may be continued from the previous film, and some of the actors may reappear, but this take on Captain America is bonafide divergent.
DVD Review: Frustrating USA Mini-Series ‘Political Animals’
Submitted by BrianTT on August 12, 2013 - 9:11pmCHICAGO – USA’s mini-series “Political Animals” should have been one of the TV events of 2012. Instead it was just one of its biggest disappointments. That cast! That subject! In a political, election season! Zzzzzzz. Sadly, the creators of “Political Animals” delivered a program more like “Dallas” than “The West Wing” and viewers tuned out to the degree that the potential second season was canned. Now we can see what went wrong in one lackluster DVD set.
Blu-ray Review: ‘The Apparition’ Ranks as One of 2012’s Worst Films
Submitted by mattmovieman on December 5, 2012 - 11:24amCHICAGO – Remember that scene in “Ghostbusters” where Sigourney Weaver slides toward a hellish demon while pinned to a chair? Or the utterly chilling moment in “Ju-On” where the contorted body of a vengeful spirit crawls toward its latest victim? Or how about that little indie movie about a young couple plagued by an inexplicable onslaught of paranormal activity?
Film Review: ‘The Apparition’ Terrifies with Shocking Level of Incompetence
Submitted by BrianTT on August 23, 2012 - 10:57pmCHICAGO – “The Apparition” is so incompetently made on every single level that it’s almost difficult to put its sheer awfulness into words. I’ll do my best. Which is more than what the producers of this pile of clichéd, derivative junk can say.
TV Review: Sigourney Weaver Carries USA’s Disappointing ‘Political Animals’
Submitted by BrianTT on July 15, 2012 - 2:40pmCHICAGO – I’m a political junkie who naturally loves to follow the world of journalism as well and so I was psyched about the premiere of USA’s mini-series, “Political Animals,” a star-studded affair about how a powerful Washington family deals with a headstrong reporter and the secrets they still hope to keep.

Film Review: Avenging Pursuit Motivates Amanda Seyfried in ‘Gone’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on February 24, 2012 - 10:47pmCHICAGO – The premise of “Gone” is a beguiling notion. What if the victim of a traumatic crime can’t get authorities to believe her? The evidence doesn’t add up, there are no physical signs of struggle and no crime scene is found. Amanda Seyfried plays such a victim, and her very sanity is questioned.

TV Review: Ambitious ‘Kings’ With Ian McShane Unlike Anything Else on Network TV
Submitted by BrianTT on March 13, 2009 - 3:00pmTelevision Rating: 3.5/5.0 |
CHICAGO – You won’t see many shows much more ambitious than NBC’s “Kings”. The multi-character drama borrows from the story of King David to create a tapestry piece about power, corruption, and war. It’s dense, layered, complex storytelling that you rarely see on network television.
