CHICAGO – There is nothing wrong with “The Smurfs” that a thousand volts of electricity couldn’t cure. It is well made, looks good in the optional 3-D and has a competent cast trying their hardest. What it lacks is a spark, either of nostalgia or a fresh update, as it meanders with the seen-it-all-before template.

CHICAGO – “Modern Family” is the funniest comedy on television. The winner of the Emmy for Outstanding Comedy Series (over highly-acclaimed programs including “Glee,” “30 Rock,” “The Office,” and more) and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Eric Stonestreet) is now available on Blu-ray and DVD and not only is it a program that everyone should see at least once but, like the greatest sitcoms, it holds up remarkably well to repeat viewing.

CHICAGO – Stephen McPherson, president, ABC Entertainment Group, announced early pick-ups of the network’s hit Wednesday night comedies “Cougar Town,” “The Middle” and “Modern Family” for the 2010-2011 Season yesterday during the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour.

CHICAGO – The highlight of tonight’s debuting shows on ABC is one of the most promising new comedy pilots of the season, the multi-layered “Modern Family,” a sitcom that both skewers the conventions of the typical TV family show and lovingly embraces them at the same time.
