TV Review: TNT’s Riveting ‘Southland’ Reflects Dark Times

CHICAGO – I know I’ve said this before but the season premiere of TNT’s “Southland,” airing tonight at 9pm CST, feels even darker than last year or the year before. It could be just a show trying to top itself in terms of edgy subject matter but it feels genuine here, like the show is increasingly reflecting our darker times.

TV Review: David E. Kelley Returns with Effective ‘Monday Mornings’

CHICAGO – David E. Kelley is one of the most influential and important TV voices of the modern era with massive hits like “L.A. Law,” “Picket Fences,” “Chicago Hope,” “The Practice,” “Ally McBeal,” “Boston Public,” and “Boston Legal”. However, it’s been a few years and a few failures for Kelley in the recent past and he’s overdue for another hit. Maybe it will be TNT’s “Monday Mornings,” premiering tonight and delivering in unexpectedly successful ways.

TV News: ‘Dallas’ Star Larry Hagman Dies at 81

DALLAS – Larry Hagman, who created one of the most famous television villains of all time (J.R. Ewing of the TV nighttime soap sensation “Dallas”), passed away on Friday of complications from cancer. He was ironically in Dallas, Texas working on the new version of “Dallas,” which was recently resurrected by TNT.

TV Review: Mary McDonnell Steps Into Big Shoes on TNT’s ‘Major Crimes’

Major Crimes

CHICAGO – The producers of “The Closer” attempt a daring move tonight by pushing forward with a barely-altered version of their award-winning program mere moments after the series finale of the Kyra Sedgwick hit. I think that for some it will be too soon. Even people who claim to be massive fans of “Major Crimes” will mutter “but I miss Brenda” under their breath.

TV Review: Kyra Sedgwick Leaves ‘The Closer’ on Dramatic High

CHICAGO – Evil doesn’t take a break for Brenda Leigh Johnson to leave the Major Crimes Unit and Kyra Sedgwick to say goodbye to the show that turned her into one of the bigger TV stars of the last decade. TNT’s “The Closer” ends tonight, August 13, 2012 with a very strong series finale.

TV Review: TNT’s ‘The Closer’ Starts Final Arc with Powerful Episode

CHICAGO – Kyra Sedgwick is in the final act of her time as one of the most popular and acclaimed stars on cable TV, and, based on the premiere, “The Closer” is going to make sure this popular character is given a riveting send-off.

TV Review: Eric McCormack Stars in TNT’s Familiar ‘Perception’

CHICAGO – There’s nothing particularly wrong with TNT’s new crime procedural, “Perception,” debuting tonight at 9pm CST after the return of their mega-hit “The Closer,” which is starting its final season, but there’s not enough particularly right to recommend it.

DVD Review: ‘Franklin & Bash: The Complete First Season’

Franklin & Bash

CHICAGO – Fans of “Franklin & Bash” may have a reasonable bit of concern given the so-so ratings of the TNT program. We here at HC have defended the show a few times (in this interview and this review) and the recently-released DVD from Sony is another solid offering (although it’s obnoxious to not offer a 2011 program on Blu-ray) but poor Breckin Meyer & Mark-Paul Gosselaar aren’t quite delivering like several of the other cable hits of the season.

TV Review: Riveting, Action-Packed Return For TNT’s ‘Falling Skies’

CHICAGO – Rarely has a program returned for its second season with as much confidence, improved storytelling skills, and overall entertainment value as TNT’s “Falling Skies,” returning tonight, June 17, 2012.

TV Review: TNT Finds Escapist Fun Buried in New ‘Dallas’

CHICAGOHBO’s “True Blood” has some serious competition this summer for your sleazy, sexy, soap opera time in the form of TNT’s rejuvenated and remarkably enjoyable reboot of “Dallas,” a show that really shouldn’t work but does so surprising ways. As J.R. Ewing (Larry Hagman) says in the premiere, “Blood may be thicker than water…but oil is thicker than both.
