TV News: Showtime Renews ‘Nurse Jackie,’ Cancels ‘United States of Tara’
Submitted by BrianTT on May 23, 2011 - 4:03pmCHICAGO – In a somewhat surprising move, Showtime has canceled the Emmy-winning comedy “United States of Tara,” while also renewing “Nurse Jackie” for a fourth season. Neither show has been much of a ratings hit, but both programs seemed to bring some critical esteem to the network. In fact, the pair has won the last two Best Actress in a Comedy Series with Toni Collette winning in 2009 and Edie Falco winning in 2010. Both are sure to be nominated again this year.
TV Review: ‘United States of Tara’ Offers Showcase For Toni Collette
Submitted by BrianTT on March 28, 2011 - 12:15pmCHICAGO – I’ve said for two seasons now that Showtime’s “United States of Tara” isn’t as good as it should be, partially because the writing and parts of the ensemble don’t live up to the Emmy-winning work by its stunningly talented star, Toni Collette, but I might have been wrong. The start of season three, debuting tonight, Mar. 28th, 2011 on Showtime, hints at a broader program with a deeper ensemble, but I’m not sure any more that this is a good thing.
DVD Review: Toni Collette, Diablo Cody Shine in ‘United States of Tara: The Second Season’
Submitted by mattmovieman on December 31, 2010 - 2:29pmCHICAGO – It’s difficult to think of a role better suited for the chameleon-like abilities of Toni Collette than Tara Gregson, a devoted wife and mother struggling with dissociative identity disorder. Every episode holds an element of surprise, since viewers are never quite sure which of Tara’s “alters” will emerge next. Will it be the perky ’50s housewife, the flirtatious teenager or the testosterone-oozing Vietnam vet?
Blu-Ray Review: Animated Masterpiece ‘Mary and Max’ Deserves Audience
Submitted by BrianTT on June 22, 2010 - 2:49pmCHICAGO – A disturbingly small number of people were given the chance to see Adam Elliot’s brilliant and moving “Mary and Max,” one of the most notable releases in arguably the best year in the history of modern animation. While “Coraline,” “Up,” “The Princess and the Frog,” and even “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” made headlines, a beautiful little film about an unusual friendship went under the radar. Don’t miss it.
TV Review: Toni Collette Continues to Shine on ‘United States of Tara’
Submitted by BrianTT on March 22, 2010 - 12:51pmCHICAGO – I personally think the show is slightly inferior to its hour-partner “Nurse Jackie,” but Toni Collette does such spectacular work on “United States of Tara” that her performance alone demands you tune in. Like Edie Falco on “NJ,” the incredibly talented Collette takes a challenging role that could have turned into caricature in the hands of a lesser actress and makes it genuine.
