CHICAGO – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on WBGR-FM (Monroe, Wisconsin) on July 2nd, 2020, discussing one of the most anticipated summer releases, the filmed-on-stage version of “Hamilton,” streaming from the Disney+ platform on July 3rd.
This is the Broadway stage version filmed in 2016 with the original cast – including music, book and lyric creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, who portrays the title character. The Walt Disney Studios bought the distribution rights for a whopping 75 million, and intended to release it in 2021, as to let the various stage versions continue to be performed. When the pandemic hit, the studio decided to move up the release and put it on their new streaming platform, Disney+. Anyone with that service can enjoy the same stage production that has thrilled audiences for over five years.
The story involves U.S. founding father Alexander Hamilton, an immigrant from a Caribbean island who became our first Secretary of the Treasury. It follows the highlights of his rise and fall, and ends with his famous pistol duel with Aaron Burr (Leslie Odom Jr.). Miranda’s Hamilton interacts with familiar names like George Washington (Chris Jackson) and Thomas Jefferson (Daveed Diggs), as well as his wife Eliza (Phillipa Soo).
