CHICAGO – The late playwright August Wilson left a gift to the world in the form of his “American Century Cycle,” a series of plays each individually set in a decade of the 20th Century, focusing on the black experience. Rudolf Hess (Christian Friedel) is the commandant of the concentration camp at Auschwitz. He lives in a luxurious house right next door, complete with servants and all the stuff stolen from the prisoners, with his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller). As the mundane activities of everyday life goes on, the sounds of the concentration camp are in the background, including gunshots and screams of agony. When Hess is due for re-assignment, Hedwig is horrified … to be losing her dream house.
