“Norjmaa” is directed by Bayaneruull – who was nominated for a Golden Rooster – and is set during World War II. A female Mongolian sheep herder named Norjmaa finds two injured soldiers, one Japanese and one Russian. She takes them in, and begins the healing process with traditional Mongolian medicine. As they get stronger, they move toward their original mission – to kill each other as enemy combatants. With three different languages, and her own war wounds of the past, Norjmaa is challenged on several fronts.
The Asian Pop-Up Cinema series – founded by Chicago film program veteran Sophia Wong Boccio – is a revolving showcase of diverse Asian films, with China, Hong Kong, Inner Mongolia, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Tibet and Vietnam all represented for the 2017 Spring Season, in films with English subtitles. Screenings occur at the AMC River East 21 in downtown Chicago, the Wilmette Theatre in Wilmette, Illinois, and various locations (including free screenings). “Norjmaa” will also have a one week run at the Wilmette Theatre starting on April 14th.
