Film Review: 'Twisters' is the Popcorn Movie it Sets Out to Be

CHICAGO – “Twisters” is the kind of movie seemingly engineered to be seen on a big screen, accompanied by ear splitting sound that rattles your seat. And in that kind of environment, it’s exactly the kind of big dumb popcorn movie it sets out to be, even if it doesn’t add up to much once it’s all over.

British actress Daisy Edgar Jones dons an American accent as a storm chaser named Kate who walks away from chasing tornadoes after a twister kills most of her high school research team. But she’s lured back by the other survivor Javi (Anthony Ramos), who has new gadgets which could help them produce the first 3D models of a twister in action … which could be used to devise better warning systems and save lives.

Glen Powell earns his movie star stripes as Tyler, a rival “Tornado Wrangler.” He’s a good ol’ boy with a YouTube channel out to build a brand while chasing the storms. His fondness for flashy but pointless stunts like firing fireworks into a funnel cloud somewhat obscures the fact that he actually knows what he’s talking about.
