Exclusive Portraits: Mark Hamill at Chicago Fan Expo, Aug 16, 2024

HollywoodChicago.com RSS Feed - August 17, 2024 - 9:52pm

CHICAGO – The force was with the Chicago Fan Expo on August 16th … what the heck else can be said? Mark Hamill is making a rare appearance and fan meet/greet all this weekend at the Expo, which runs until Sunday, August 18th. Photographer Joe Arce was at his live panel event and captured two Exclusive Portraits.

Mark Richard Hamill was born in Oakland, one of seven siblings. His father William was a naval officer and the family moved often, but Hamill eventually landed at Los Angeles College, where he studied drama. He began in television in the 1970s, making appearances on “General Hospital,” the original pilot of “Eight is Enough.” “The Partridge Family,” and “One Day at a Time.” And in the age of the high-quality TV movie, he had a role opposite Linda Blair in “Sarah T. – Portrait of a Teenage Alcoholic.”

It was his friend Robert “Freddy Krueger” Englund who tipped Hamill on the Luke Skywalker audition, although his agent had already set it up. The rest is movie legend. The first “Star Wars” film (1977, AKA “A New Hope”) was sensationally successful, and Hamill would reprise his role in two direct sequels. In 2015 he revisited the character in the reboot film “The Force Awakens” and two more films in that series, as well as using his VoiceOver talent as different characters in several “Star Wars” spin-offs, and appearing as a technologically de-aged Luke in “The Madalorian.”

Somewhat typecast after his Skywalker breakthrough, Hamill tenaciously pursued film (“The Big Red One,” “Corvette Summer.”), Broadway stage (“The Elephant Man,” “Amadeus,” “The Nerd”) and especially VoiceOver in animation, most notably as The Joker on “Batman: The Animated Series” and other series (including the film adaptation of “The Killing Joke”). Hamill, a comic book geek, went on to voice characters in both the Marvel and DC animated universes. He also expanded to film animation and video game voice roles, and has achieved as high a fame and regard in VO talent as his Skywalker role.

At his showcase panel at the Chicago Fan Expo on Friday, August 16th, he spoke and answered questions for a packed house. HollywoodChicago.com photographer Joe Arce capture these Exclusive Portraits at the event.

Slideshow, Review: Green Day at Wrigley Field on Aug 13, 2024, Photos by Jeff ‘Doc’ Doles

HollywoodChicago.com RSS Feed - August 15, 2024 - 5:29pm
| Image 1 of 17 | Billy Joe Armstrong of Green Day

CHICAGO – When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade—or in my case, when life gives you a denied photo pass, you grab a disposable camera and go full 1990s at a Green Day concert. I was all set to capture every sweat drop and guitar riff from the photo pit, but ironically this photographer was invited to the show without his camera.

No high-tech gear allowed! So, in honor of my teenage angst and Green Day’s prime, I ditched the DSLR and embraced the grainy, unpredictable glory of a disposable camera. If you thought “Dookie” was raw, just wait until you see these photos (above!).

Green Day’s night concert at Wrigley Field was nothing short of electrifying … a true testament to the band’s enduring legacy and their ability to transcend generations. From the moment Billie Joe Armstrong – with his signature charisma and boundless energy – burst onto the stage, it was clear that this would be a night to remember. The ballpark venue, steeped in the rich history of Chicago’s beloved Cubs, was the perfect backdrop for a concert that was as much a celebration of the past as it was a living, breathing moment of rock and roll history.

As the band kicked off the night with “The American Dream is Killing Me,” the crowd erupted in a mix of cheers and fervent singing. Armstrong, a master at commanding the stage, effortlessly connected with the audience, making every person in the massive stadium feel like they were part of an intimate and shared experience. His energy was infectious, driving the band through a 145-minute set that was both a high-octane journey through their extensive catalog and a deeply nostalgic celebration.

This year’s tour had a special significance, marking the 30th anniversary of their groundbreaking album “Dookie” and the 20th anniversary of the politically charged “American Idiot.” The set list was a carefully curated mix of fan favorites and deep cuts, designed to thrill both longtime fans and newer generations who have grown up with Green Day as the soundtrack to their lives. Songs like “American Idiot,” “Holiday,” and “Wake Me Up When September Ends” had the crowd singing along at the top of their lungs, their voices echoing throughout the historic ballpark.

But what made this night truly special was the sense of unity among the audience. The crowd was a diverse tapestry of ages, with toddlers perched on their parents’ shoulders and grandparents rocking out just a few feet away. It was a beautiful sight to see, and a testament to Green Day’s ability to resonate with people of all ages. The band’s performance of classics like John Mellencamp’s “Jack and Diane” and Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin’” added an extra layer of nostalgia, connecting generations of music lovers in a shared celebration of timeless rock anthems.

As a lifelong Cubs fan, standing on the same field where legends like Andre Dawson and Sammy Sosa once roamed added an indescribable magic to the evening. The connection between the history of Wrigley Field and the timeless music of Green Day created a perfect synergy. When the band closed the night with “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” the lyrics – “So take the photographs and still frames in your mind / Hang it on a shelf in good health and good time” – felt like a personal message to every person in the crowd. It was a reminder that, no matter where life takes you, nights like this are meant to be cherished forever.

In the end, Green Day’s concert at Wrigley Field was more than just a performance; it was a celebration of life, love, and the unbreakable bond that music creates. It was a night of insane euphoria, where the past and present collided in a glorious, high-energy celebration of everything that makes Green Day one of the greatest live acts of all time. For those lucky enough to be there, it truly was the time of their lives.

Podtalk: Jack C. Newell’s New Doc ‘The Candidate’ & Wabash Lights, Aug 15 & 17, 2924

HollywoodChicago.com RSS Feed - August 14, 2024 - 5:09pm

CHICAGO – This is an important upcoming weekend in the art evolution of Chicago’s own Jack C. Newell. The filmmaker will have a (click) WORLD PREMIERE of his new documentary “The Candidate” at the Gene Siskel Film Center (8/17/24) and “turn on the glow” for an installation ten years in the making, Wabash Lights (8/15).

Part of DOCS FOR DEMOCRACY, “The Candidate” is a verité documentary directed by Newell, as the production is embedded with progressive democrat Qasim Rashid as he battles xenophobia (as a Pakistani-American and Muslim), Covid, and corporate interests in two different congressional races against well-funded incumbents … first against a Virginia Republican in 2020, and in 2024 against an Illinois Democrat. After the August 17th World Premiere, the film will embark on a multi-city tour in the Fall.

The Wabash Lights is a plan ten years in the making, designed to reenergize the Wabash Avenue area in Chicago’s Loop – framed by the el train tracks above the street – with programmable LED tubes on the underside of those tracks, and will finally see the light on its August 15 dedication. Fifty feet of lights, spanning one block between Madison and Monroe Streets, will be switched on at 8:15pm, starting Phase One of the project. The plan, formulated by Jack C. Newell and design strategist Seth Unger, is to eventually light seven blocks, from Lake Street to Van Buren Street, and make the lights a permanent public art display.

In a Podtalk interview with Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com, filmmaker Jack C. Newell talks “The Candidate” and Wabash Lights …

In a video excerpt from the interview, the pitch for the cinema and art events …

The Wabash Lights dedication will take place on Wabash between Madison and Monroe Avenues in Chicago’s Loop on August 15th, 2024. “The Candidate” will have its WORLD PREMIERE on August 17th (6pm) at the Gene Siskel Film Center, 164 North State Street, Chicago. NÜTRL Vodka Selzer – the beverage with real juice and real vodka – began this DJ Series in July as a nod to the every-17-year cicada invasion. The August show is a “good vibes” tribute to the Chicago summer, which is shorter than some, but grander in vibes-ology.

Podtalk: Meezahn Senbetta & Davis Cameron Chu on Film ‘Hand Job’

HollywoodChicago.com RSS Feed - July 30, 2024 - 2:28pm

CHICAGO – Last week, filmmakers Meezahn Senbetta & Davis Cameron Chu had their friends/family premiere of their debut short “Hand Job” … and don’t let the title lead you astray. The film is an incredibly expressive and unique journey of one man’s savior hand. They reserved their first interview for HollywoodChicago.com and Pat Über-Critic McDonald.

The lover of an inert man (Davis Cameron Chu) is trying to get a hold of him over the phone, but he is unresponsive. The pills he took are beginning to have their effect … except for one saving grace. One of his hands is still aware and sentient, and is the only thing between him and potential tragedy. Can it muster enough courage to save the day?

I met the filmmaker couple where all good film people meet, Chicago’s historic Music Box Theatre, shortly after they began writing, directing, performing and producing “Hand Job.” Meezhan Senbetta is a Chicago-based creative producer, who graduated from Northwestern University. After dabbling in reality TV (Netflix’s “Love is Blind”) and talent rep work, she currently is a creative resource manager at Sarofsky.

Davis Cameron Chu is a mixed-media filmmaker who matriculated from Cleveland State University, where his thesis film “Falling Up” was a festival fave. He received a local Great Lakes Emmy for his work on a doc about the golden age of kid’s TV in Cleveland. He is an actor, musician and designer/animator at Sarofsky.

In Part One of their Podtalk first interview by Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com, co-filmmaker creators Meezham Senbetta and Davis Cameron Chu talk about the journey to “Hand Job” …

In Part Two, more nuts, bolts and gratitude toward the film’s completion …

In a Video Clip, a short plug …
