Blu-Ray Review: Classic B-Movie Horror of ‘The Toolbox Murders’
Submitted by BrianTT on February 16, 2010 - 7:47pmCHICAGO – If you’re like me, you forgot how totally weird the cult horror classic “The Toolbox Murders” actually is. Perhaps the dull, by-the-numbers Tobe Hooper remake (with the otherwise great Angela Bettis from “May”) warped our minds, but this is a trippy slasher film, a notable entry in the slasher genre now available in glorious B-movie High-Def for the first time.
Blu-Ray Review: ‘Law Abiding Citizen’ Guilty of Incessant Gimmickry
Submitted by mattmovieman on February 15, 2010 - 2:36pmCHICAGO – 2009 was a very bad year for Gerard Butler. He has the potential to be one of the most appealing actors in Hollywood, but like Hugh Jackman, he’s usually cast in roles that sap him of all his inherent charisma, such as the obnoxious misogynist in “The Ugly Truth” or the tormented prisoner in “Gamer.” Yet while both of those films were tortuously awful, “Law Abiding Citizen” at least has the germ of a good idea.
‘The Wolfman’ With Benicio Del Toro Misses By a Hair
Submitted by BrianTT on February 14, 2010 - 2:04pm![]() Rating: 2.5/5.0 |
CHICAGO – Joe Johnston’s “The Wolfman” nearly works. The Benicio Del Toro vehicle has a strong supporting cast, a few striking visual compositions, and at least one must-see sequence, but it misses the mark as a complete film, never quite as compelling or entertaining as it could or should have been.

TV Review: Bland ‘How to Make It in America’ Too Familiar
Submitted by BrianTT on February 14, 2010 - 1:31pmCHICAGO – Ben (Bryan Greenberg) and Cam (Victor Rasuk) could accurately be compared to Vinny and Eric five or six years before they made it big in the first season of “Entourage”.
Blu-Ray Review: Galvanizing ‘Hunger’ Paints Unforgettable Portrait of Revolt
Submitted by mattmovieman on February 12, 2010 - 12:24pmCHICAGO – Here’s an art house film more visceral and unsettling than any run-of-the-mill mainstream bloodbath. It’s the feature debut of visual artist Steve McQueen, an unfortunate name for anyone who doesn’t happen to be the star of “Bullitt.” His previous work has been confined to art galleries, and there are countless shots in “Hunger” that could function as standalone artworks.
‘Percy Jackson & the Olympians:The Lightning Thief’ Conjures Up a Big Bolt of Bland
Submitted by PatrickMcD on February 12, 2010 - 10:06amCHICAGO – Oh, those nutty kids today. At one moment they’re regular high schoolers, doing all those post millennium teen rituals, then suddenly they’re demigods in “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief.”

TV Review: Great Cast Nearly Rescues Deeply Flawed ‘Survivors’
Submitted by BrianTT on February 11, 2010 - 7:42pmCHICAGO – Who knew the end of the world would be so dull? BBC America makes a rare misstep this weekend with the debut of “Survivors,” an ensemble show with a strong cast and timely concept but self-serious writing that rarely clicks into anything entertaining in its premiere.
Blu-Ray Review: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen Direct Excellent ‘A Serious Man’
Submitted by BrianTT on February 11, 2010 - 1:40pmCHICAGO – One of the byproducts of expanding the Best Picture nominees has been that half of the most notable films of the year in the eyes of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences are now available on Blu-ray and DVD including “District 9,” “The Hurt Locker,” “Up,” “Inglourious Basterds,” and now “A Serious Man”.
Blu-Ray Review: ‘The Time Traveler’s Wife’ Flawed But Worth Seeing
Submitted by BrianTT on February 11, 2010 - 1:01pmCHICAGO – Robert Schwentke’s adaptation of the beloved novel “The Time Traveler’s Wife” was mostly critically ridiculed in theaters but should make for a satisfying rental this Valentine’s Day and deserves a second consideration from those that completely dismissed it at first. It looks beautiful in HD and the film’s flaws are easier to forgive at home without the expectation of this long-awaited project.
Video Game Review: ‘Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment’
Submitted by BrianTT on February 11, 2010 - 12:26pmCHICAGO – The critical phrase that kept surfacing during my playing time of the mini-RPG “Vandal Hearts: Flames of Judgment” was “good for a downloadable game”. The game is flawed but its low purchase price might make it worth a look for fans of old-fashioned role-playing games but most modern gamers will be disappointed.
Blu-Ray Review: Avoid Dull Trip to ‘Couples Retreat’
Submitted by BrianTT on February 11, 2010 - 9:47amCHICAGO – It seems ironic that “Couples Retreat,” a film about a group of friends who think they’re going on a peaceful vacation but get hoodwinked into couples counseling, is itself a bait-and-switch, advertising a sexy comedy and delivering a dull trip. Avoid this awful excuse for a comedy.
Interview: Cast of ‘Percy Jackson & the Olympians’ Capture the Lightning
Submitted by PatrickMcD on February 10, 2010 - 3:28pmCHICAGO – Bringing a popular book series to screen is successfully achieved primarily through casting, and the adaptation of “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” is no exception. The young cast brims with enthusiasm for the new movie.
DVD Review: ‘More Than a Game’ Takes Standard Approach to Great Story
Submitted by mattmovieman on February 10, 2010 - 3:23pmCHICAGO – Some documentaries tell stories that are so suspenseful and crowd-pleasing that one would swear they were written by Hollywood screenwriters. The extraordinary series of events chronicled in “More Than a Game” has a trajectory and formula straight out of a classic “rags to riches” sports picture. Let’s hope Sandra Bullock doesn’t star in the remake.
Blu-Ray Review: ‘The Music Man’ Looks Sharper, Thunders Louder Than Before
Submitted by mattmovieman on February 9, 2010 - 4:12pmCHICAGO – “The Music Man” is alive in a way few Hollywood musicals ever are. Its big numbers often grow organically, allowing melodies to emerge from the rhythm of speech, overlapping action or the seemingly mundane movement of characters across the frame. In the exuberant world of this ageless classic, music is less of a self-conscious construct than an irresistible life force infiltrating the cadence of everyday life.
TV Review: ‘Past Life’ Fails to Reincarnate Anything Entertaining
Submitted by BrianTT on February 9, 2010 - 12:59pmCHICAGO – FOX’s new supernatural drama “Past Life” is a laughable waste of time, a show that feels like an inferior version of a dozen other programs, coming off as a weak variation on “Medium,” “The Ghost Whisperer,” and countless other procedurals.
HollywoodChicago.com Hookup: 25 ‘Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief’ Chicagoland Passes With Uma Thurman

Blu-Ray Review: Dull ‘Amelia’ Should Be Grounded
Submitted by BrianTT on February 8, 2010 - 12:29pmCHICAGO – It seems downright sad that “Amelia,” a movie that was so widely predicted to be a part of the 2009 awards season, would be released on Blu-ray and DVD on the same day as the Oscar announcements. On paper, “Amelia” seemed like Oscar bait through and through with important subject matter headlined by one of the few women to have more than one Oscar. On Blu-ray, it’s easy to see why this cinematic plane crashed and burned.
Blu-Ray Review: ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,’ ‘Mystic River’
Submitted by BrianTT on February 8, 2010 - 11:06amCHICAGO – I know what you’re thinking: What do “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” and “Mystic River” have in common? Nothing at all other than a Blu-ray release date of February 2nd, 2010. Oh, and they’re two films you should probably own if you have a Blu-ray player.
Blu-Ray Review: ‘New York, I Love You’ Celebrates Cinema, Forgets City
Submitted by mattmovieman on February 5, 2010 - 2:19pmCHICAGO – For film lovers unable to attend international film festivals, “Paris, je t’aime” provided an irresistible glimpse at world cinema. Eighteen celebrated filmmakers were each recruited to make a short subject set in the City of Love, thus allowing audiences to view the same town from different cultural perspectives. Some shorts worked better than others, but the resounding majority of them were utterly captivating.
Blu-Ray Review: Jason Bourne Films Continue to Deliver With Combo Releases
Submitted by BrianTT on February 5, 2010 - 12:01pmCHICAGO – The Universal release of “The Bourne Trilogy” was not only one of the best Blu-ray titles of 2009 but it’s still one of the best box sets on the HD market twelve months later. The question is how does Universal continue to make a dime on the Matt Damon juggernaut of a franchise while we wait for the latest drama regarding the potential fourth film. Welcome to the Bourne flipper discs.
Channing Tatum, Amanda Seyfried Can’t Quite Deliver ‘Dear John’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on February 5, 2010 - 9:29amCHICAGO – Love stories are as common at the movies as popcorn and sticky floors. Despite this, rising stars Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried add their own spin to the timeworn plot theme in “Dear John.”

Slideshow: Ozzy Osbourne Reality Show at His ‘I Am Ozzy’ Book Signing
Submitted by PatrickMcD on February 4, 2010 - 8:47pmCHICAGO – Ozzy Osbourne, the famous “Prince of Darkness” rocker and MTV reality-show legend, stopped by the area on Jan. 30, 2010 with a book signing appearance at the Skokie, Ill. Barnes & Noble to promote his new autobiography “I Am Ozzy”.
Blu-Ray Review: ‘Love Happens’ Epitomizes Dire State of Romantic Comedy
Submitted by mattmovieman on February 4, 2010 - 3:20pmCHICAGO – In the realm of lazy date movies, “Love Happens” achieves a sort of morbid grandeur. There isn’t a single original or authentic moment in all 109 minutes of the picture, which is so devoted to its formulaic structure that it often doesn’t make a lick of sense. People say and do things for no conceivable reason other than to create “crises” leading to “resolutions” leading to audience exasperation.
Interview: Michael Hoffman Stops at Academy Awards With ‘The Last Station’
Submitted by BrianTT on February 4, 2010 - 2:29pmCHICAGO – When the Oscar nominations were announced earlier this week one of the more unfamiliar titles was probably “The Last Station,” a historical drama nominated for Best Actress (Helen Mirren) and Best Supporting Actor (Christopher Plummer).
TV Review: ‘Important Things With Demetri Martin,’ ‘The Sarah Silverman Program’
Submitted by BrianTT on February 4, 2010 - 11:31amCHICAGO – Demetri Martin and Sarah Silverman are now back-to-back on Thursday nights on Comedy Central with “Important Things With Demetri Martin” and “The Sarah Silverman Program” and the two incredibly talented comedians make for a perfect fit as both shows have similar strengths and weaknesses.
Interviews: Channing Tatum, Amanda Seyfried Talk Twosome in ‘Dear John’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on February 3, 2010 - 4:21pmCHICAGO – Hot young stars are always welcome on the playground of popular culture. Prime examples are Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried, whose charming insights highlight their up-and-coming status in promoting their new film, “Dear John.”
Blu-Ray Review: Great Box Set of ‘Doctor Who: The Complete Specials’
Submitted by BrianTT on February 3, 2010 - 11:48amCHICAGO – The last five hours of David Tennant’s spectacular run as the tenth doctor of “Doctor Who” have been collected in a great Blu-ray box set from BBC Home Video titled “Doctor Who: The Complete Specials”. Tennant was recently voted the most popular doctor in the long history of the beloved show. Watching these five hour-long specials makes it clear why.
