So says an insider to Nikki Finke.

“He’s a purist, an artiste, an exquisite craftsman, but he just had a budget schedule he couldn’t accommodate,” writes the insider.

The movie was budgeted around $100 million, and was to star Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins, and Emily Blunt. The make-up FX were to be done by master Rick Baker (“American Werewolf in London”).

No updates from Mark Romanek’s web site (although it hasn’t been updated in over six months). All over Mark Romanek’s Director’s Series DVD special features, many people comment that he’s a visionary who isn’t that easy to work with.

It should also be noted that Romanek, one of the best music video and commercial directors in the world, made Michael and Janet Jackson’s “Scream” video — then the most expensive music video made.

'Script Wasn't There'

Jeffrey Wells quotes a “reliable source”:

“Among other things, the ‘Wolfman’ script wasn’t ready before the strike began.”

Variety now has the story, too.

Romanek exited the film late Monday night over creative differences. The film has long had Benicio Del Toro aboard to play the werewolf, and the studio just set Emily Blunt (“Charlie Wilson’s War”) and Anthony Hopkins to play the other leads in the film.

The studio maintains that Romanek left the project in strong shape and that it expects to set another director quickly. No word on whether a Feb. 18 start date will remain in place.
