Here are facts about today’s grave water crisis:

  1. Nearly 1 billion people have no access to clean water and more than 2.5 billion don’t have proper sanitation.
  2. Water-borne diseases kill 9,000 people (mostly small children) every day. That’s one person every 10 seconds.
  3. More lives are claimed each year by water-related diseases than by guns and wars.
  4. Only one in three people in the world have a toilet. More have cell phones.
  5. In many countries, the impact is felt most deeply by women who gather water, care for stricken children and cope with the ramifications of this life-crushing burden.

Of course...

Of course we take clean water for granted. We flush the toilet with potable water in this country. I’m sure there are plenty of people around the world that would find that to be insane…

Yes we take it for granted

We take it for granted to the point that we have it all around us and yet we pay a high price for it in stores. I mean who does that? If we took the money that we spend on bottled water in one year in the US, we would have enough money so that the whole world could have clean water as well.

Clean Water for Granted??

Yes. Unfortunately we do, but traveling to third-world countries can give you a real eye opener.

Clean Water - Interesting Facts

Unsafe drinking water and lack of sanitation kills more people every year than all forms of violence, including war. Unclean drinking water can incubate some pretty scary diseases, like E. coli, salmonella, cholera and hepatitis A. Given that bouquet of bacteria, it’s no surprise that water, or rather lack thereof, causes 42,000 deaths each week.

The average American uses 159 gallons of water every day – more than 15 times the average person in the developing world. From showering and washing our hands to watering our lawns and washing our cars, Americans use a lot of water. To put things into perspective, the average five-minute shower will use about 10 gallons of water. Now imagine using that same amount to bathe, wash your clothes, cook your meals and quench your thirst which is what many people in undeveloped countries do daily.

It seems water is something many people take for granted. Not everyone can go to the local grocery store and pick up a gallon or two of clean water. Not everyone can drink from a faucet without risking his or her life.

* Think about that next time you water your lawn, take a 20-minute shower, or leave the hose on. ;)

Most people take clean water

Most people take clean water for granted. I don’t because I know that chemicals, pollution, etc., pollute our lakes & oceans. That’s why I drink bottled water.

Yep

Especially here in the Great Lakes, where fresh water is so plentiful
