Entertainment News: 2010 Golden Globe Nominees Announced
CHICAGO – “Black Swan,” “Inception” and “The Social Network” were among the big film nominees in 2010 for the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards. The nominees were announced this morning, December 14th, in Los Angeles. “Mad Men,” “Boardwalk Empire,” “30 Rock” and “Glee” were among the TV nominees.
Rounding out the Best Motion Picture, Drama Category is “The King’s Speech” and “The Fighter.” Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical, has “Alice in Wonderland,” “The Kids Are All Right,” and in the Golden-Globes-wants-their-star-power-to-show-up nominees, “Red,” “The Tourist” and “Burlesque.”
Continuing the film categories, Best Performance by An Actress, Drama, included Natalie Portman (Black Swan), Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole) and newcomer Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone). Anne Hathaway (Love and Other Drugs), Angelina Jolie (The Tourist) plus Annette Bening and Julianne Moore (The Kids Are All Right) were nominated in the Best Performance by an Actress, Comedy or Musical category.

For the Best Perfomance by An Actor, the Drama category recognized Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), Colin Firth (The King’s Speech) and James Franco (127 Hours). The Comedy or Musical category includes Johnny Depp vs. Johnny Depp (Alice in Wonderland and The Tourist), Kevin Spacey (Casino Jack) and Paul Giamatti (Barney’s Version).
One of Golden Globe Awards main appeal is their television categories, and the Best Television Series, Drama, include veteran shows (Mad Men, Dexter) and newcomers (The Walking Dead, Boardwalk Empire). The Comedy series nominees are familiar nods (30 Rock, The Big Bang Theory, Glee, Modern Family) and one fresh arrival (The Big C).
TV Actors in Drama (Jon Hamm: Mad Men, Hugh Laurie: House, Michael C. Hall: Dexter) are joined by one new kid (Steve Buscemi: Boardwalk Empire), with familiar comedy actors (Alec Baldwin: 30 Rock, Steve Carrell: The Office) rounded out by HBO and Fox Shows (Thomas Jane: Hung, Matthew Morrison: Glee).
TV Actresses, Drama, include the previously recognized (Julianna Margulies: The Good Wife, Elisabeth Moss: Mad Men, Kyra Sedwick: The Closer) and a couple of surprises (Katey Segal: Sons of Anarchy and Piper Perabo: Covert Affairs). Familiar TV Actresses in Comedy (Tina Fey: 30 Rock, Edie Falco: Nurse Jackie) are joined by a veteran in a new show and of course, a Glee participant (Laura Linney: The Big C and Lea Michele).

Shocking omissions include the highly touted Coen Brothers film “True Grit,” which failed to get any nominations despite the star power of Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin. The Martin Scorsese directed “Shutter Island” and James Brook’s “How Do You Know” joins Grit on the sidelines with no nominations. Inception did get Best Motion Picture recognition, but the cast were shut out of the acting categories. In the television end, Modern Family, despite getting a nod for Best Comedy series, was shut out in the acting categories.
In general, the Globes took the safe route in television, and made their usual concessions in the film categories with head scratchers like Burlesque. One sensational nomination was in the Best Performance by An Actress in a Supporting Role, Jacki Weaver, for her unforgettable but little seen turn as a sly Mother in the Australian “Animal Kingdom.”
