CHICAGO – In the same day major news broke out about “The Dark Knight Rises,” another key casting choice in an equally anticipated Warner Brothers/Legendary Pictures production has also been buzzing throughout cyberspace.

According to Variety, Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe is in talks to play Jor-El, the father of Superman in director Zack Snyder’s franchise reboot, “Man of Steel.” Jor-El was a character originated by acting legend Marlon Brando, whose brief performance was nevertheless top-billed in Richard Donner’s 1978 classic, “Superman.” Brando later “reprised” the role through the use of archival footage in Bryan Singer’s 2006 effort “Superman Returns,” which failed to stir immediate interest in sequels. The presence of Crowe in Snyder’s film suggests that the script (written by “Batman Begins” scribe David S. Goyer) may take the form of an origin story.

Kevin Costner and Diane Lane are already confirmed to play Superman’s earthbound parents, while Amy Adams is set to star as the Man of Steel’s love interest, Lois Lane. As in “Superman Returns,” the titular role will be played by a relatively fresh face: Henry Cavill, best known for his recurring role as Charles Brandon on Showtime’s “The Tudors.” The film is scheduled to shoot this summer in Chicago.

‘Man of Steel’ stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane and Michael Shannon. It is written by David S. Goyer and directed by Zack Snyder. It is set to open in December 2012.
