October 13th, 6:10pm

In a nod to Sergio Leone, Turkish master Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s unconventional crime drama unfolds into an immersive experience. What seems to begin as a typical police procedural quickly spirals into anything but when a confessed murderer is saddled into leading the cops to the buried body. Dead-ends, subtle clues, and red-herrings all coalesce into an intense study on the nature of truth and our ability to grasp the reality of any given moment.

“The Turin Horse”
October 13th, 7:15pm
October 15th, 2pm

Turin 1899: Nietzsche witnesses a horse being whipped and subsequently retreats into madness. The Turin Horse observes the life of that fateful horse as well as its owners, a farmer and his daughter, who struggle to survive in harsh conditions. A sparse, dramatic and almost silent tale, it is a fitting finale for acclaimed director Béla Tarr, who has announced this to be his last film.

“The Whisperer in Darkness”
October 11th, 10:15pm
October 12th, 9:45pm

Based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft, The Whisperer in Darkness is an eerily deft recreation of classic 1930’s studio horror fare. Professor Albert Wilmarth, a smug skeptic, is forced to question his views by a series of increasingly bizarre encounters with the supernatural. Genuinely terrifying and highly entertaining, Whisperer is a fitting homage for Lovecraft aficionados and, for newcomers, a perfect introduction to one of the great horror masterminds of the 20th century.

Come back on October 14th, 2011 for a look at the final chunk including “The Artist” and “The Descendants” and stay tuned to HollywoodChicago.com for consistent CIFF coverage, more red carpet footage, and interviews with fest stars John C.
