Feature: 10 Annoying Things About the 2011 Golden Globe Nominations
CHICAGO – The Hollywood Foreign Press Association may have done nothing as soul crushing as the nominations for “Burlesque” and “The Tourist” last year but it’s not for lack of trying. Here are their ten biggest offenses, followed by the full list of nominees for this year’s Golden Globes.
10. Actors who really needed a push today to get over the hump to Oscar and didn’t get it — Gary Oldman, Elizabeth Olsen, Kirsten Dunst, Michael Shannon. It now seems likely that Oldman’s title of “Best Actor Never Oscar-Nominated” will continue.
9. The blatant push for trendy new shows on the TV side — Best Drama (80% new), Best Comedy (40%), Best Actor Drama (60%), Best Actress Drama (80%). Yes, it’s been a strong year for new shows, but seriously? The obvious desperation to be #trending is getting pathetic.
8. Right actor, wrong movie — Ryan Gosling has two acting nods, neither for “Drive.” Jessica Chastain is good in “The Help”; she’s great in “Take Shelter” & “Tree of Life.”
7. Short memory for TV voters — where are the stellar performers from the first quarter, including Edie Falco, Margo Martindale, and Timothy Olyphant? Are shows that air from January to April disqualified?
6. “Community” shut out again entirely. Sigh.
5. “Cars 2” over “Winnie the Pooh” for Best Animated Feature Film. Even John Lasseter thinks that’s ridiculous.
4. Why six nominees for Best Drama? Was “The Ides of March” a mistake? Is there still time to correct that? “We’re just kidding. There were only five nominees. We just wanted to make George Clooney’s morning. And that Clooney Best Director pick over Terence Malick or Nicholas Winding Refn or Lars Von Trier or David Fincher or, well, about a dozen other people? We were kidding about that too. One more — Gosling is nominated for “Drive” instead. All better.”
3. “My Week With Marilyn” over “The Muppets” for best comedy. Feel free to praise “Marilyn,” but don’t you dare tell me you laughed at it more than at “The Muppets,” which also missed out on Best Song. Cause I’ll call you a liar.
2. Four years old might as well be off the air as “Breaking Bad” and “Parks and Recreation” miss out in best series in favor of freshmen entries.
1. Movies that have more Golden Globe nominations than “Tree of Life” or “Martha Marcy May Marlene” — “W.E.,” “Machine Gun Preacher,” “Gnomeo and Juliet,” and “Cars 2.”
