CHICAGO – There is no better time to take in a stage play that is based in U.S. history, depicting the battle between fact and religion. The old theater chestnut – first mounted in 1955 – is “Inherit the Wind,” now at the Goodman Theatre, completing it’s short run through October 20th. For tickets and more information, click INHERIT.
Entertainment News: ‘La La Land’ Sweeps 7 Categories at 2017 Golden Globe Awards
CHICAGO – It was a musical-oriented, high octane night at the 74th Golden Globe Awards on January 8th, 2017. Hosted by Jimmy Fallon of NBC-TV’s “The Tonight Show,” the Globes celebrated the best in TV and film in 2016, and selected Best Pictures “La La Land” (Comedy/Musical) and “Moonlight” (Drama), and honored the Best TV Shows with “Atlanta” (Comedy, FX) and “The Crown” (Drama, Netflix). “La La Land” broke the record for the most Golden Globes in one night, sweeping all seven of the categories the musical film was nominated in.
In the film actor and actress categories, the two big surprises were in the Best Actress Drama category, as Isabelle Huppert took home the Globe for “Elle” (a critically acclaimed but little seen French film) over the favored Natalie Portman for “Jackie,” and Aaron Taylor-Johnson won Best Supporting Actor for “Nocturnal Animals,” besting four higher profile performances. In the Comedy/Musical Best Actress category, it was Emma Stone for “La La Land, and the Best Actors were favorites Ryan Gosling for “La La Land” (Comedy/Musical) and Casey Affleck for “Manchester by the Sea” (Drama). Viola Davis won the Best Supporting Actress award for “Fences.”

The Golden Globes continued their tradition of surprises in the TV categories, as they awarded the Best Performance by an Actress award to Tracee Ellis Ross of ABC-TV’s “Black-ish,” who gave a memorable acceptance speech, and allowed Hugh Laurie the podium again for his Actor Supporting Role for a Limited Series for the AMC Network spy series ‘The Night Manager.”
The awards night was not without its awkward and controversial moments. After doing a spot-on parody of “La La Land,” to open the show, host Jimmy Fallon had a teleprompter failure for his monologue, stumbled out the gate, and never really recovered. Sofia Vergara of ABC-TV’s “Modern Family” chose (or was given) an off-color introduction for the three “Miss Golden Globes,” the teenage daughters of Sylvester Stallone. But finally, Meryl Streep, the recipient of yet another award (the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement honor), stole the night with a heartfelt speech pointing out the negative aspects of the president-elect during his 2016 presidential campaign.
