Film News: Lana Wachowski to Present ‘Bound’ at 2018 Cinepocalypse on June 27
CHICAGO – The roots of the Chicago-born Wachowski Siblings (“The Matrix,” “Cloud Atlas”) is in the 1990s, with their unforgettable directorial debut “Bound” (1996). To celebrate that landmark, the Cinepocalypse Film Fest invited Lana Wachowski to present the film at the historic Music Box Theatre on Wednesday, June 27th, 2018 (7pm). “Bound” tells the story of Violet (Jennifer Tilly), who longs to escape her relationship with her mafioso boyfriend Caesar (Joe Pantoliano). Her life gets a bit complicated when she begins a same sex affair with Corky (Gina Gershon), and the two women hatch a scheme to steal two million dollars from the mafia. At the time, the film broke barriers for its realistic portrayal of a lesbian relationship in a mainstream film, and critics praised it’s signature Wachowski style and humor.

In 1996, Larry (Lana) and Andy (Lilly) were known as the Wachowski Brothers, as credited in their director debut. Both have since come out as transgender women, the first directors in film history to do so. They were born in Chicago, and graduated from Whitney Young High School. Both dropped out of East Coast colleges to begin a house painting/construction business, while at the same time writing for Marvel Comics. Their first film script, “Assassins,” was directed by Richard Donner. That first experience inspired their directing career, to gain more control over their material. “Bound” was followed by notable films including “The Matrix” series (three films), “V for Vendetta” (2005), “Speed Racer” (2008), “Cloud Atlas” (2012) and “Jupiter Ascending” (2015).
