Aretha Franklin was burdened by a two-faced preacher father (Forest Whitaker) and an unconventional childhood which included teen pregnancy. As her star began to rise in the early 1960s, she married an abusive husband (Marlon Wayans) and couldn’t find a song niche until 1967, when she teamed with record producer Jerry Wexler (Marc Maron). That’s when songs like “Respect” and “Think” poured out. and other hits followed, but even that success couldn’t shake her “demon,” which the Queen of Soul called her depression.
