CHICAGO – Starfire from the TV series “Titans” has heroically taken on another persona. “Nanny” is a multi-layered and engrossing story about a caregiver in New York City named Aisha (Anna Diop), who works for an upscale couple looking after their child. She is originally from the African country of Senegal, and had to leave her young son behind to establish a new life in America. Written and directed by Nikyatu Jusu, this film won the U.S. Dramatic Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival for its incisive view of class structures and immigrant experiences in America, and the ramifications of decisions that are calculated into a survival instinct.

What characterizes the film is its unexpected twists, and the deep dive into the symbolism of water and the roots of nativism through Aisha’s encounter with ancient gods and the supernatural. Nothing is what it seems on the surface, including a wealthy couple who might not seem to be who they are. This is a unique and spiritual experience into the immigrant lives in America, doing the work that never gets done.

Anna Diop is a rising star both for her in-depth performance in “Nanny” and her own immigrant’s story. Coming to America at a very young age, she grew up with one foot in her own Sengalese roots and the other in the American consequence. She moved to New York City at age 16 to pursue acting and modeling, and landed a recurring role on “Everybody Hates Chris” in 2006.

Working her way through television roles, she also appeared on “Quantico,” “Greenleaf” and was a regular on the series “24: Legacy.” She joined the superhero genre in the DC Universe, landing a role on “Titans” (HBO Max) as Starfire, currently in its fourth season. Her first major film was in writer/director Jordan Peele’s “Us.”
