The year is 2010 for this based-on-truth story, as eight women from a closed Mennonite religious order (portrayed by Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Judith Ivey and Frances McDormand, among others) debate their existence in a community where it has been proven that men in the order have drugged and raped them and others in the female collective. Through secret meetings and potential voting – aided by a male ally (Ben Whishaw) – the women are deciding what their traditions and canon law means, when those laws allow abuse for half of the population.

”Women Talking” is currently in theaters. Featuring Rooney Mara, Claire Foy, Jessie Buckley, Judith Ivey, Ben Whislaw and Frances McDormand. Screenplay adapted by Sarah Polley and Miriam Towes, from a novel by Towes. Directed by Sarah Polley. Rated “PG-13”
