Jem Starling (Eliza Scanlan) is a 17-year-old girl raised in that community, who is an emerging woman in a restrictive world. She lives for her Christian dance troupe, and finds bodily freedom through movement, which causes conflict regarding her status as a woman in the community. This organically leads to an exploration of her sexuality through an affair with a young married missionary named Owen (Lewis Pullman), and the balance of power is about to tilt on its holier-than-thou axis.
