CHICAGO – If you’ve watched any cop procedurals on TV or otherwise, you’ve seen the recitation of the “Miranda Warning” (you have the right to remain silent, etc.), but what you may not have known is the incredible true story behind that recitation. Director Michelle Danner is the filmmaker behind “Miranda’s Victim.”

Ernesto Miranda (Sebastian Quinn) is accused of rape by Trish Weir (Abigail Breslin) in the early 1960s. Justice for that particular crime is difficult now and especially in that era, and the confession coerced out of Miranda leads to a Supreme Court decision to protect the perpetrator and law enforcement through the Miranda Warning. However the victim’s story was not over … and the wheels of justice kept turning.

This story can only be put into the category of truth is stranger than fiction. The fact was Ernesto Miranda was the least likely person to represent the famous warning, yet history chose him. Breslin gives a chillingly subtle performance as the title character, never backing down from what she knows to be true. Ardently representing the two sides in the trial is Ryan Phillippe as John Flynn (for Miranda) and Luke Wilson as Lawrence Turoff (representing the uphill battle of Trish Weir). This hidden history is fascinating and was ongoing for years. Danner’s sure touch with storytelling makes this a worthwhile lesson in accidental infamy and the mechanics of the legal system.

Michelle Danner is a producer, director, acting coach and actor, whose director debut film was “How to Get a Date in Queens” in 2006. Since then, she has had five more films as producer/director under her belt, and is currently in production for her seventh film, “Helios.”
