Podtalk: Filmmaker Lihn Tran is ‘Waiting for the Light to Change’
CHICAGO – The title is the perfect statement on this debut feature film from writer/director Lihn Tran. “Waiting for the Light to Change” is about a group of post collegiate friends who are wondering what is next for their lives during a vacation together. The film release – through Video On Demand and DVD – is October 20th, 2023.
The film is about transition, as friends in their mid twenties gather for a week long vacation at a Lake Michigan beachside home. The main character is Amy, who has gone through a dramatic weight loss, and finds herself wrestling between loyalty she feels for her best friend Kim and her attraction to Kim’s new boyfriend. The cast is Asian American, but the issues are universal. What does “being adult” mean when there is that point in your twenties when decisions need to be made?

Rating: 4.5/5.0 |
This subtle and reflectively intuitive film is deftly written and cinematically rendered. The universality of the film is also filtered through the lens of the Asian American experience, with its own surface challenges and outside-looking-in circumstances. The cast exquisitely delivers all this material through naturalistic performances, and an almost documentary-like exposure of their lives and loves. The is an human film about modern adulthood, as fluid and pliable as any point in social history … a magnificent filmmaker debut for Lihn Tran.
Born and raised in Vietnam, Lihn Tran moved to the U.S. to pursue higher education. Trained as an editor, she released an award winning short film “De la Morera” the same year as “Waiting for the Light to Change” and has been recognized in many U.S. and international film festivals.
