Chicago@SXSW: Curtis Matzke on His ‘Residencies & Retreats’ Panel

CHICAGO – The Windy City will be represented at the upcoming SXSW Festival in Austin (March 8th-16th, 2024), and throughout the week there will be a series of articles previewing their interaction. The series begins with Curtis Matzke of Unfinished Films, sitting on the panel he created, “Understanding Artist Residencies & Retreats for Filmmakers” on March 10th.

Curtis Matzke is a director, screenwriter, and producer based in Chicago. His work has been recognized at dozens of festivals, including Athens International, Cinequest, NFMLA, and more. In 2019, Curtis directed a short documentary celebrating Chicago’s Music Box Theatre, which earned him regional Emmy nominations for Off-Camera Directing and Historical Documentary.

Matzke’s first full-length documentary is in post and fiscally sponsored by Film Independent. “Sink” is his latest horror short film and premiered at the Academy-qualifying Chicago International Film Festival and has since screened at a dozen more festivals. Curtis completed residencies at the Vermont Studio Center, Stowe Story Labs, Chicago International Feature Development Lab, Reykjavik Talent Lab, and Chateau Orquevaux.
