Film Review: ‘The Space Between Us’ Falls Into a Black Hole & Dies
Submitted by PatrickMcD on February 2, 2017 - 9:21pmCHICAGO – You know you’re in trouble when the opening scene of a film inspires forehead slapping levels of incredulity. And that’s just the beginning of what I felt while watching “The Space Between Us,” another entry in the long line of would-be weepies about young lovers torn apart, usually by class or disease.
Film Review: ‘Ender’s Game’ Loses Personality in Journey From Book to Film
Submitted by BrianTT on October 31, 2013 - 10:37amCHICAGO – Gavin Hood’s “Ender’s Game” may be the best example of a current problem with science fiction: From “Oblivion” to “After Earth” to most of “Star Trek Into Darkness” and now this adaptation of the Orson Scott Card book, modern science fiction has become so depressingly sterile as to drain the genre of most of its joy.

Blu-ray Review: Amazing Transfer Brings Oscar-Winning ‘Hugo’ Home
Submitted by BrianTT on March 1, 2012 - 5:22pmCHICAGO – Two films tied for the most Oscars this week and only one is available on Blu-ray as Martin Scorsese’s beloved “Hugo,” winner of five Oscars, hit the home market with one of the best HD transfers I’ve ever seen (and I’ve seen hundreds). This movie looks beautiful in HD, arguably more so than it did in 3D in theaters. I have more issues with the film than most critics but the transfer perfectly amplifies the film’s strengths, downplaying its weaknesses. The special features are light but the video is strong enough not to complain.

DVD Review: Manipulative ‘The Boy in the Striped Pajamas’ Feels False
Submitted by BrianTT on March 16, 2009 - 11:38amDVD Rating: 1.5/5.0 |
CHICAGO – The plot of “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas,” new to DVD and based on a best-selling novel by John Boyne, may have worked on the page but a number of awful decisions on the way to the screen have taken a story with inherent emotional strength and turned it into misguided, manipulative drama.
