Film News: Martin Landau, Oscar Winner for ‘Ed Wood,’ Dies at 89

LOS ANGELES – His acting career spanned from working with Alfred Hitchcock to Tim Burton. Along the way, he had significant TV and film roles including a Best Supporting Oscar win for portraying Bela Lugosi in Burton’s “Ed Wood”. Martin Landau died in Los Angeles on July 15, 2017. He was 89.

CHICAGO – In the midst of all the Oscar-oriented news, Chicago’s best movie venue – the Music Box Theatre – has been conducting an “ultimate” 70mm Film Festival. It is the last four days of this fest, so this is a reminder to experience it if you haven’t already. 70mm refers to a historical widescreen film format that expresses an amazing cinema canvas, and was used with great fanfare in Quentin Tarantino’s most recent film, “The Hateful Eight.”

CHICAGO – One of director Tim Burton’s great actor collaborators is the veteran performer Martin Landau. Landau voices Mr. Rsykruski, a science teacher who inspires young Victor Frankenstein in “Frankenweenie,” released on Blu-Ray on January 8th. This is part of Laudau’s magnificent 60 year career in film, television, stage and acting instruction.
