Film Review: ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Returns to Tim Burton Form

CHICAGO – “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” is a return to the practical effects playfulness of Tim Burton’s earlier work and thankfully doesn’t try to be a note-for-note remake of the largely flawless original, although there are callbacks a plenty. The film is one of director Tim Burton’s better late period films but when you consider his output from the last 20 years or so, that’s not exactly high praise.

Film Review: ‘The Flash’ Makes a Splash with a Literal Dash

CHICAGO – It amazes me to say it but with “The Flash” the DC cinematic universe has managed to actually make a movie that’s fun, for at least a little while. Even previously heralded DC movies like “Wonder Woman” left me cold with their incessant insistence on bludgeoning the audience with digital destruction.

On-Air Film Review: A Vampire State Building for ‘Morbius’

CHICAGO – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on WBGR-FM (Monroe, Wisconsin) on March 31st, reviewing “Morbius,” the latest film in the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU), in theaters beginning April 1st.

Film Review: ‘The Protege’ Understood the Assignment and Studied Up On Action Films Past

CHICAGO – I’ve always felt that the line between being a spy or an assassin has always been blade-thin. Both kill people based on the orders of someone else.

Film Review: Tim Burton’s Version of ‘Dumbo’ is Disappointingly Glum

CHICAGO – For reasons which remain unexplained, Walt Disney Studios and director Tim Burton have decided to weigh down the sweet story of a flying elephant with a whole pachyderm’s worth of pathos. The animated original clocked in as one of Disney’s shortest full length animated features. But the live action version drags us through nearly an extra hour’s worth of post-World War One misery.

Film Review: Gunplay & Violence Fuel Heroics in ‘American Assassin’

American Assassin

CHICAGO – There was another mass shooting (eight dead) in Texas this week, but it was underreported because it didn’t involve “undesirables” and just seemed like another week in America. This blithe attitude towards guns, gunplay and violence continues in the movies, this week with the overindulgent release “American Assassin.”

Film Review: ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Spins a Web of Fun

CHICAGO – Summer movies should be fun, and the superhero craze has Marvel Studios combining their adventures with a little joy. “Spider-Man: Homecoming” mostly contains that big high spirit, with Tom Holland portraying the title character with youthful zeal and energy.
