CHICAGO – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for “The Fabelmans,” an autobiographical film from America’s most famous modern movie director, Steven Spielberg, in theaters on November 23rd.
Burt (Paul Dano) and Mitzi (Michelle Williams) are raising three daughters and one son named Sammy (Gabriel LaBelle). After taking Sammy to see the film “The Greatest Show on Earth,” the boy becomes fascinated with film in general through the legendary train crash in that movie. Seeking an in to this fantasy world, his parents buy him his first 8mm movie camera and his love for film keeps evolving, especially when he becomes a boy scout. And although the family moves three times, his mother continues to conduct a secret affair with his father’s best friend (Seth Rogen), which ends their parent’s marriage. Sammy then attends high school in California, where his Jewish roots are sullied by anti-semitism, but he wins over the class and the girls with his filmmaking skills, and then moves on to the wider world.
