TV Review: Showtime’s ‘Lock ‘N Load’ Wastes Opportunity
Submitted by BrianTT on October 21, 2009 - 12:21pmCHICAGO – The new reality series “Lock ‘N Load,” debuting tonight, October 21st, 2009, on Showtime, is a completely wasted opportunity to add something unique and interesting to the debate over gun control. Completely leaving political or personal viewpoints on controversial weapons issues out of my opinion, the show simply isn’t interesting or entertaining.

Blu-Ray Review: Sam Raimi’s ‘Drag Me to Hell’ a Great Halloween Choice
Submitted by BrianTT on October 20, 2009 - 5:33pmCHICAGO – There are a number of choices for your Halloween movie dollar this season including “Saw VI” and “Paranormal Activity” in theaters and new Blu-Ray editions of “Audition” and this year’s “Orphan” and Sam Raimi’s great “Drag Me to Hell”. Universal has packaged Raimi’s glorious return to the genre that made him a star with a gorgeous video and audio treatment but lackluster special features. The movie deserves a bit better.
Blu-Ray Review: Gaudy ‘Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas’ Lacks True Holiday Cheer
Submitted by BrianTT on October 20, 2009 - 4:57pmCHICAGO – Just weeks before the opening weekend of Jim Carrey’s new “A Christmas Carol,” Universal has released a Blu-Ray + DVD combo pack of the nearly decade-old “Grinch” remake, featuring Carrey as the infamous Seussian Scrooge. The combination of Carrey’s star power and Theodor Geisel’s beloved source material assured the film’s massive box office success.

Blu-Ray Review: Takashi Miike’s ‘Audition’ More Effective 10 Years Later
Submitted by BrianTT on October 20, 2009 - 3:47pmCHICAGO – Takashi Miike’s controversial and terrifying “Audition,” recently released in a ten year anniversary Blu-Ray edition, feels even richer and more dramatically interesting than it did ten years ago as the dating world has become so much more reliant on technology.

DVD Round Up, Oct. 20, 2009: ‘Medium,’ ‘Princess,’ ‘Top Chef’
Submitted by BrianTT on October 20, 2009 - 1:06amCHICAGO – Over the course of dozens of editions of HollywoodChicago.com’s DVD Round-Up column, we have brought our readers more than a few collections that possessed a remarkable variety of genres in one piece, but few match this week’s column, a quartet of titles that include supernatural drama, reality television, foreign animation, and classic fantasy.
Blu-Ray Review: ‘Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory’ in HD
Submitted by BrianTT on October 20, 2009 - 12:26amCHICAGO – You can keep Tim Burton’s remake of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” with Johnny Depp. I’ll be watching the classic “Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory,” recently released on Blu-Ray, for years to come. It’s not a must-own family film release like the recent “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” or “Wizard of Oz” packages, but the film remains remarkably timeless.
DVD Review: ‘Il Divo’ Explores the Bloody Trenches of Italian Politics
Submitted by BrianTT on October 19, 2009 - 11:39pmCHICAGO – Since the totality of what I know about Italian politics could fit inside a fortune cookie, I’d normally be inclined to demand that films on the subject keep it simple by not utilizing too many characters and not bothering with a complicated plot that spans roughly fifteen years. But the slick “Il Divo” didn’t have me pleading with writer director Paolo Sorrentino to slow down so that I could catch up with its history.
Blu-Ray Review: Predictable ‘The Proposal’ Elevated By Fine Cast
Submitted by BrianTT on October 19, 2009 - 11:26pmCHICAGO – Just as “My Best Friend’s Wedding” existed solely to provide Julia Roberts with a career comeback, “The Proposal” aimed to prove that Sandra Bullock still has what it takes to headline a romantic comedy. In that regard, it succeeded admirably.

TV Review: ‘The Simpsons’ Scares Up Few Laughs With ‘Treehouse of Horror’
Submitted by BrianTT on October 18, 2009 - 2:11pmCHICAGO – Even the most diehard fans of “The Simpsons,” a group of which I would proudly call myself a member, would admit that the last few seasons of the show have been disappointing at best and, at times, downright bad (especially the current season we’re in, which has produced fewer laughs than anything on FOX Sunday nights).
TV Review: BBC America’s ‘Occupation’ Features Great Performances
Submitted by BrianTT on October 18, 2009 - 12:32pmCHICAGO – The American perspective on the war in Iraq has been well-documented in feature films and TV movies, but I was intrigued at the idea of seeing a British film about the Middle East, especially one with great actors like James Nesbitt and Stephen Graham.

Interview: ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ Director Spike Jonze With Stars Max Records, Catherine Keener
Submitted by HollywoodChicago.com on October 16, 2009 - 1:22pmCHICAGO – From the looks of things, you’d think “Where the Wild Things Are” director Spike Jonze is more than just Max Records’ director. You’d think Jonze was his 12-year-old star’s father, too.
Interview: Director F. Gary Gray of ‘Law Abiding Citizen’ With Jamie Foxx
Submitted by PatrickMcD on October 16, 2009 - 8:14amCHICAGO – Justice is the theme of “Law Abiding Citizen,” a new film starring Jamie Foxx as a district attorney in Philadelphia who is targeted for revenge by a former client (Gerald Butler). Directing the film is veteran F. Gary Gray (”Friday,” “The Italian Job”).
Interview: The Fab Five With LeBron James in ‘More Than a Game’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on October 16, 2009 - 8:04amCHICAGO – Inspiration comes from within, and the four members of Akron, Ohio’s St Vincent - St. Mary High School, playing basketball with LeBron James from 1998-2002, have a deep well of inspiration to give in the new film “More Than a Game.”
Video Game Review: ‘Brutal Legend’ Rocks, But Misses a Few Chords
Submitted by BrianTT on October 16, 2009 - 12:49amVideo Game Rating: 3.5/5.0 |
CHICAGO – Can a game be clever and beautiful to look at but not be fun? EA’s highly anticipated “Brutal Legend” tests this theory with some amazing design, a unique concept, and very funny storytelling, but with actual gameplay that can be remarkably frustrating. To paraphrase something a friend recently said about something else that seems appropriate here, I liked everything about “Brutal Legend” except actually playing it.
Blu-Ray Review: Jonathan Demme’s ‘Stop Making Sense’ With The Talking Heads
Submitted by BrianTT on October 16, 2009 - 12:35amCHICAGO – The Talking Heads hold such an important place in the development of my musical taste (and director Jonathan Demme in my film taste), that I find it more difficult than usual to critically appraise the 25th Anniversary release of “Stop Making Sense” on Blu-Ray. Even with my personal love for everything related to the film aside, “Stop Making Sense” has held up remarkably well, still standing as one of the best concert films ever made.
DVD Review: Forget Remake; Check Out Original ‘The Stepfather’
Submitted by BrianTT on October 15, 2009 - 11:30pmCHICAGO – I could be wrong, but my love for the 1986 original and the lack of critic screenings for the remake opening today leads me to feel confident in saying that the DVD of the original “The Stepfather,” available on the format for the first time this week, is the way to go this weekend if you’re looking for a nasty slice of domestic terror.
Blu-Ray Round Up, Oct. 15, 2009: ‘Wolf,’ ‘Waterworld,’ ‘Frankenstein’
Submitted by BrianTT on October 15, 2009 - 5:37pmCHICAGO – The Blu-Ray Round-Up is back with this week’s collection of HD titles that may not get the buzz of something like the latest Sandra Bullock romantic comedy or what Sam Raimi brought back from Hell but could be just what you’re looking for at the mall this weekend. A few modern horror movies, a notable box office bust, and a beloved BBC show highlight this week’s list. Pick your favorite.
Blu-Ray Review: Steven Soderbergh’s Fascinating ‘The Girlfriend Experience’
Submitted by BrianTT on October 15, 2009 - 5:02pmCHICAGO – Steven Soderbergh’s “The Girlfriend Experience” is a captivating, fascinating examination of the way we have turned every element of our lives into a business transaction. With “Che,” “The Informant!,” and this fantastic drama, Soderbergh is continuing to make the case that he is one of the most important American filmmakers working today.
Video Game Review: ‘Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2’ Delivers Amazing Action
Submitted by BrianTT on October 15, 2009 - 4:27pmVideo Game Rating: 4.0/5.0 |
CHICAGO – For every “Iron Man” or “The Dark Knight,” there are a half dozen movies like “Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer” or “Elektra” littering the marketplace. Naturally, those of us well-versed in the world of superhero entertainment consider ourselves lucky if every other product featuring caped men (or women) actually works.
