Video Game Review: ‘James Bond: Blood Stone’ Tarnishes Legend of 007
Submitted by BrianTT on November 15, 2010 - 9:02pmCHICAGO – While MGM continues to do everything in their power to delay the development of the James Bond franchise (“Quantum of Solace” came out in 2008 and not a single frame of a new film has been shot, meaning it’s still going to be awhile), Activision has pressed forward and developed an entirely new story in video game form.
Blu-Ray Review: ‘Scott Pilgrim vs. the World’ Bursts With Special Features
Submitted by BrianTT on November 15, 2010 - 4:58pmCHICAGO – Edgar Wright’s “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” may have been (incorrectly) perceived as a box office bomb but a large cult grew around the film before it was even released and it’s a following that will only grow stronger with the fantastic Blu-ray release, a disc filled with more special features than even the most hardcore fan of the movie could have hoped for. The movie is still a bit flawed but it plays well at home and I can’t say enough about how wonderful it is when a top-notch studio like Universal treats a loyal film following with the respect they deserve.
Feature: The Top 9 Films of Director Danny Boyle
Submitted by BrianTT on November 15, 2010 - 12:46pmCHICAGO – In various interviews over the years, British filmmaker Danny Boyle has expressed his belief that “your first film is your best film.” It may not be the most technically accomplished or dramatically satisfying work, but it marks a crucial period of freshness and experimentation, as the rookie director becomes acquainted with the creative challenges of feature film production.
DVD Review: Charming, Delightful ‘Kisses’ Plays Like Modern Fairy Tale
Submitted by BrianTT on November 15, 2010 - 12:27pmCHICAGO – When we’re young, a relatively short distance can seem like a trip around the world. I vividly remember thinking my grandparents lived in another country when I was a kid when it was really just the other side of town. Naturally, when two kids run away from home and go from a rural nightmare into the big city, it’s going to feel not unlike Dorothy traveling to Oz. This sense of adventure, wonder, and magical reality infuses every frame of Lance Daly’s beautiful “Kisses,” a delightful Irish art film recently released on DVD.
Interview: Controversial Bjorn Lomborg Wants Us to ‘Cool It’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on November 13, 2010 - 10:11amCHICAGO – The subject of global warming is not going away, both from an environmental standpoint and as a debate. The argument that crystallized with Al Gore’s “An Inconvenient Truth” has effected politics, science and the thoughts of all world citizens. Academic Bjorn Lomborg contributes his point of view in the new documentary, “Cool It.”

Film Review: Denzel Washington, Chris Pine Star in Slick, Entertaining ‘Unstoppable’
Submitted by BrianTT on November 12, 2010 - 9:18amRating: 3.5/5.0 |
CHICAGO – “Unstoppable” plays perfectly to Tony Scott’s flashy strengths as a director. There’s no deep meaning or character-driven dialogue for him to clutter up with his style over substance aesthetic. And so the film truly works as a great slice of escapist entertainment as long as you know what to expect.

Submitted by BrianTT on November 12, 2010 - 8:39amCHICAGO – What separates us during extreme danger? Why do some people collapse under the weight of likely death while others push forward and make it out alive? What fuels the will to survive to the point that it can do the unimaginable?

Aron Ralston has surely thought about his personal answers to these questions and Danny Boyle’s riveting film about his defining incident, “127 Hours,” now brings them to millions of captivated fans in theaters around the world.
Film Review: ‘Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Elliot Spitzer’ Recounts Political Saga
Submitted by BrianTT on November 12, 2010 - 8:30amRating: 3.5/5.0 |
CHICAGO – “He was going to be our first Jewish President.” This uncredited sound bite from the opening of “Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Elliot Spitzer” may sound like an exaggeration but the great Alex Gibney makes the case that it is not hyperbole and that the public pedestal-knocking that happened to the former Governor was more important than you probably think. Arguably the best year in the history of the documentary continues with another strong film from one of our best non-fiction filmmakers.

Film Review: ‘Four Lions’ Dares to Humanize Terrorists Through Satire
Submitted by mattmovieman on November 12, 2010 - 8:03amCHICAGO – If the objective of war is to drain the enemy of all humanity, then “Four Lions” is one of the best anti-war movies in recent years. Many people prefer thinking of terrorists in the same abstract terms that the terrorists themselves think of their victims. If war is all about demonizing “the other side,” how can we ever hope to come to a mutual understanding?

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Ocean’s 11’ Continues to Define Cool With 50th Anniversary Edition
Submitted by BrianTT on November 11, 2010 - 1:12pmCHICAGO – When one considers that it is five-decades-old this year, the influence of the original “Ocean’s 11” is somewhat jaw-dropping. The fact is that the Rat Pack has defined cool for half-a-century now and their influence on everything from film to music to fashion shows no signs of fading. Find me another 50-year-old movie that breathes cool like “Ocean’s 11.”
TV Review: USA’s ‘Burn Notice’ Continues to Set Bar For Spy Shows
Submitted by BrianTT on November 11, 2010 - 12:11pmCHICAGO – USA’s spy hit “Burn Notice” returns tonight, November 11th, 2010 with another solidly-entertaining mix of the cool, the comedy, and the crazy. The middle of season four ended with Michael Weston (Jeffrey Donovan) crossing paths with two lunatics (Michael Rooker & Robert Patrick), being given a list that was the key to destroying the people who burned him, getting into an intense shoot-out, and a horrible car accident. Yes, there are a lot of loose ends to tie up.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Elf’ Given Collector’s Edition Treatment For Holiday Season
Submitted by BrianTT on November 11, 2010 - 10:46amCHICAGO – There’s no better studio at repackaging already-available product than Warner Bros. and they have taken the truly-great “Elf” and given it the lavish Collector’s Edition treatment just in time for the 2010 holiday season. The Will Ferrell family comedy has held up remarkably well in the seven years since its release and makes a perfect selection for what could be called the WB space-killers of enormous Collector’s Editions that have also included “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” the “Harry Potter” movies, “A Christmas Story,” and more.
Interview: ‘Four Lions’ Filmmaker Chris Morris Explores Absurdity of Terrorism
Submitted by mattmovieman on November 11, 2010 - 9:01amCHICAGO – Chris Morris has never been the type of comic to shy away from controversy. His uncompromising, fiercely satirical work has consistently broke ground and raised eyebrows, from his acclaimed BBC Radio broadcasts to his award-winning TV shows “The Day Today,” “Brass Eye” and “Jam,” which gained notoriety for their refusal to treat any subject as sacred.
Blu-Ray Review: Adam Sandler, Kevin James Star in Mediocre ‘Grown Ups’
Submitted by BrianTT on November 10, 2010 - 5:51pmCHICAGO – Nowhere near as abysmal as some of Adam Sandler’s worst comedies and yet also not nearly as good as it could or should have been, “Grown Ups” might make a reasonable rental on a late fall evening but don’t get your expectations too high. Sandler may be trying to grow up with his comedy friends but a lazy script and horrendous direction by regular collaborator Dennis Dugan hold back what should have been one of the stronger comedy ensembles of the year.

DVD Review: Hit Trilogy Continues With ‘The Girl Who Played With Fire’
Submitted by BrianTT on November 10, 2010 - 11:21amCHICAGO – One of the biggest pop culture stories of 2010 has to be the various incarnations of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy. As millions read the books on their way back and forth to work and David Fincher prepares to turn them into star-making vehicles for Rooney Mara, the foreign-language film versions of the books have been released in theaters and the middle story, “The Girl Who Played With Fire,” was recently released on Blu-ray and DVD.

The show has legions of fans but has never quite broken out like pop culture smashes “Monk,” “The Closer,” or “Mad Men.” It’s a reliably-enjoyable mystery-comedy that thrives on the comic timing and perfect chemistry of its talented leads.
