Captain America's creation
He was named Captain America to represent the hope of America during actual World War II. He was created to ease the tension during the war and to bring hope to the masses that America would win against the Nazi’s and the Axis forces. Also, no other rank sounds right with the name of America. Seriously, go through the ranks and see if you can make something like Sergeant America sound as cool or heroic as Captain America.

Cap!
My name is Jake Caputo.
In the comics, Captain America is given the name because he was created to be the #1 weapon against the Nazis. The name was meant to be a symbol of freedom for Americans and meant to strike fear into the Nazis (and Red Skull, of course.)
How did Captain America get his name?
The U.S. Government gave Steve Rogers a costume based on the American flag, an unbreakable shield (given to him by President Franklin Roosevelt), a sidearm, and named Captain America. From that point on, Steve Rogers was Captain America.
Captain America Contest entry
The U.S government wanted a “super soldier army” and were determined to use Steve Rogers to his fullest potential. To this end, they decided to use him as a superhero to fight the Nazis; to become a symbol of freedom and hope against Nazi forces as well as a counter-intelligence agent. He also would be their answer to and main weapon against the leader of the Nazi terrorist operations - the Red Skull. The U.S. Government gave him a costume based on the American flag, an unbreakable shield (given to him by President Franklin Roosevelt), a sidearm, and named him Captain America.

How did Captain America get his name?
In World War II patriotic solider Steve Rogers recipient of the “Super Soldier Serum” became the living symbol of freedom, Captain America. Left for dead while frozen in ice, the star-spangled hero with an indestructible shield awoke years later to continue his never-ending battle for liberty.
