CHICAGO – After months and months of speculation, “Grand Theft Auto V” has officially been announced as in production by Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive Software. Rockstar Games started the hype for the next game in the very popular open-world franchise when they changed their sites to an image of the game’s logo with the words “Trailer 11.02.11.”

The promise for the November 2 trailer is huge news for fans of the game series, as it will be the first look into all the details that have been rumored for months about the game. The biggest rumor: that the location of the new game will be set in real-life Los Angeles. The game series has already included Liberty City (based on New York), Vice City (based on Miami), and San Andreas (based on San Fransisco in “GTA I” and a state that included 3 cities that represented Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Las Vegas in “GTA San Andreas”), but the game series has never used a real life American city as the game’s setting. This rumor seems all the more true as the game has been listed under the codename “Rush” for some time now.

Other rumors surrounding the new game: the game will include characters such as a Welsh monk, a weed evangelist, an actor, a publicist, and a spiritualist/hippy; Gilbert Gottfried and Robert De Niro may both lend voices to the cast; and the game may have themes of global recession.

The six “GTA” games previously in the series have sold more than 114 million copies and “GTA IV” held the first week record of $500 million in sales before “Call of Duty” beat the record twice (and may do so again when Modern Warfare 3 is released on November 8). However, I wouldn’t be surprised if “GTA” gives “COD” a run for its money when “GTA V” is released.

Stay tuned to Hollywood Chicago for the release of the “GTA V” trailer on November 2 and any other news about the next installment in one of the biggest video game franchises ever.
