Film News: ‘Puss in Boots’ Wins Weekend Box Office For Second Consecutive Week

CHICAGO – For the second week in a row, the animated DreamWorks feature “Puss in Boots” came in with the top spot at the weekend box office. The film, based on the feline character that originated in the “Shrek” series, totaled $33 million in its second week in theaters.

The most impressive part of “Puss in Boots” winning this weekend was not that it beat out the low competition of “Tower Heist” and “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas,” but because the total of $33 million was only a 3% drop from its total gross on its debut weekend. A usual drop is in the double digit percentages, but the second weekend gross for the cat was only $1 million less than its first go around.

The two new releases for the weekend, “Tower Heist” and “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas” came in with $25.1 million and $13.1 million respectively, good enough for second and third place. With such a big name cast, the people involved with “Tower Heist” can’t be excited about the low weekend results.

In other box office news, “Paranormal Activity 3” finished in fourth with $8.5 million, giving it a total box office gross of $95.3 million. Barring a complete collapse in interest, the film will easily breach the $100 million mark before it exits theaters.

Will “Puss in Boots” make it three weekends in a row with another win next weekend? If it does, it will have to beat out all the rollover films, as well as the new releases of “J. Edgar” “Immortals” and “Jack and Jill.”
