Film Review: ‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Returns to Tim Burton Form

CHICAGO – “Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice” is a return to the practical effects playfulness of Tim Burton’s earlier work and thankfully doesn’t try to be a note-for-note remake of the largely flawless original, although there are callbacks a plenty. The film is one of director Tim Burton’s better late period films but when you consider his output from the last 20 years or so, that’s not exactly high praise.

TV Review: HBO’s Disappointing ‘Hemingway & Gellhorn’ with Clive Owen, Nicole Kidman

CHICAGO – It pains me to say this — HBO’s “Hemingway & Gellhorn” is a complete mess, a film littered with awful directorial decisions, built on a misguided screenplay, and featuring performances that range from mediocre to downright horrendous. I’m as big a cheerleader for HBO and their line of original films as you’re likely to find but this is one of the worst.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off’ Continues to Endure

Ferris Bueller's Day Off Blu-Ray

CHICAGO – John Hughes’s creative peak in the 1980s was brought about by a great deal of writing in a very small period of time. He was gifted at churning out films, but his prolific nature caused him to noticeably repeat himself.
