Blu-Ray Review: ‘Solitary Man’ Showcases Michael Douglas at His Best

Solitary Man Blu-Ray Thumb

CHICAGO – Michael Douglas is so good at playing a particular type of character that it’s easy to forget just how good of an actor he is. While his father seemed capable of playing any role, from van Gogh to Spartacus, Douglas has specialized in playing suave scoundrels with slicked back hair, a snakelike voice, and a sinfully seductive belief in the inherent goodness of greed.

TV Review: Maggie Q Provides Guilty Pleasure Thrills in ‘Nikita’

CHICAGO – There are certain programs that are easy for a critic to defend on the strength of their ensemble, the brilliance of their writing, or other easily identifiable elements that make them “work.”

Exclusive Portrait: Megadeth Metal Guitarist Dave Mustaine

Dave Mustaine, photograph by Joe Arce

CHICAGO – Head banging and air guitaring was the order of the day a couple weeks ago, as Dave Mustaine of the group Megadeth made an appearance at the Borders Books in Chicago on State Street to greet fans and sign his new book, “Mustaine: A Heavy Metal Memoir.”

DVD Review: ‘The Lottery’ Sings Bittersweet Praise For Charter Schools

The Lottery DVD Thumb

CHICAGO – The little boy looks intently at his hand. He’s trying with all his might to solve a math problem posed by his father, whose tenderness and patience have begun to reach their breaking point. As the camera closes in on the boy’s face, his eyes glisten with frustration until his mind reaches an epiphany: 2 plus 3 equals 5. In that one beautiful shot, the miracle of learning is captured on film.

Blu-Ray Review: Another Great Season of NBC’s ‘The Office’

The Office S6 BD

CHICAGO – The news of Steve Carell’s departure from NBC’s “The Office” after this upcoming season led to much debate as to whether or not the incredible sitcom could survive without its award-worthy star. That discussion probably won’t end until a replacement is named to run Dunder-Mifflin but you can check out the great sixth season, now available on Blu-ray, to form your own opinion.

TV Review: Donal Logue Leads Pack of Misfits in Charming ‘Terriers’

CHICAGOFX continues their streak of quality programming that includes “Rescue Me,” “Justified,” “Archer,” “The League,” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” with the very-promising-and-entertaining “Terriers,” a new riff on the private investigator drama with a spectacular pack of TV veterans both in-front and behind-the-camera.

Blu-Ray Review: Stupid ‘Marmaduke’ Fails in Every Way

Marmaduke

CHICAGO – How do complete disasters like “Marmaduke” get made? Shouldn’t there be some sort of quality insurance and when a studio sees that a film is this execrable, they are allowed to pull some sort of last-minute ripcord and make sure it’s never inflicted on paying customers? Wouldn’t that be a good use of our tax dollars?

DVD Reviews: ‘Brothers and Sisters,’ ‘Chuck,’ ‘Supernatural’

Supernatural

CHICAGOLast week we covered several of the more notable rookie programs of the just-passed TV year and their inaugural TV-on-DVD season sets. This week, we’re back with a few of the veterans of the field, three shows that have never become critical smashes but have all developed their own devoted followings for good reason.

DVD Review: Annoying ‘Seven Days’ Wastes the Talents of Yunjin Kim

Seven Days Thumb

CHICAGO – What’s more depressing than a Hollywood blockbuster regurgitating cliches? A foreign film clearly inspired by those cliches, that’s what. Shin-yeon Won’s 2007 Korean thriller “Seven Days” fuses the worst stylistic excesses of Michael Bay and Tony Scott with the plot of a particularly ludicrous “CSI” episode. An American remake would not only be unnecessary, but throughly redundant.

Blu-Ray Review: Bonus-Heavy Release of Will Ferrell’s Beloved ‘Anchorman’

Anchorman

CHICAGO – “Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy” is one of the most beloved comedies of the ’00s, a film that may have failed to crack $100 million on its initial release but has legions of fans who now know the entire script by heart after dozens of DVD and cable viewings. Like many comedy hits, Adam McKay’s directorial debut has been given the gift set treatment complete with collectibles and hours of special features. It’s exclusive to Best Buy for the next few months but we have a look at it for you now.

CHICAGO – With the release of “The American,” it’s time to rally ‘round the flagpole and see if it waves.

Film Review: Drew Barrymore, Justin Long Short of ‘Going the Distance’

CHICAGO – Drew Barrymore no doubt is working hard to become Queen of the Romantic Comedy. She has done over ten of them, more if you count “Bad Girls.” (kidding) When recycling themes even the best of them can get redundant when seeing the same actress involved. “Going the Distance” is not even among the best of them.

Film Review: Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Machete’ Pushes Excess Past Breaking Point

CHICAGO – Not everything should be filet mignon. Sometimes you just want a greasy, delicious cheeseburger. Now imagine eating ten of those cheeseburgers in a row.

Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Machete’ Pushes Excess Past Breaking Point

HollywoodChicago.com Oscarman rating: 2.5/5.0
Rating: 2.5/5.0

CHICAGO – Not everything should be filet mignon. Sometimes you just want a greasy, delicious cheeseburger. Now imagine eating ten of those cheeseburgers in a row. Robert Rodriguez’s “Machete” starts as a wonderful gore-fest but falls victim to its creator’s inability to realize he doesn’t need to answer to every violent vision he can dream up. The film is proof that even extremely over-the-top films can be monotonous in that their one tone is “ARGH!”

Film Review: Amazing Saga of ‘The Tillman Story’ Has Lasting Power

The Tillman Story
HollywoodChicago.com Oscarman rating: 5.0/5.0
Rating: 5.0/5.0

CHICAGO – You are unlikely to see a documentary this year more powerful than “The Tillman Story.” This film will shake your concept of heroism, the marketing machine of government, the military complex, and the state of journalism in the new millennium. It is a remarkable film that sent me out of the theater as angry as the people who refused to let Pat Tillman become the exact opposite of what he wanted to be. Don’t miss it.

Film Review: Violent, Extreme Crime Saga of ‘Mesrine: Public Enemy #1’ With Vincent Cassel

Mesrine: Public Enemy #1
HollywoodChicago.com Oscarman rating: 3.5/5.0
Rating: 3.5/5.0

CHICAGO – When we last left Jacques Mesrine in “Mesrine: Killer Instinct,” he was robbing banks, killing cops, and escaping from jail. In “Mesrine: Public Enemy #1,” Jacques Mesrine robs banks, kills cops, and escapes from jail. The second half of the “Mesrine” saga contains most of the same strengths and flaws as its predecessor and one has to wonder if the two films couldn’t have been merged into a stronger and more accomplished single project.

DVD Reviews: 2010 Rookie TV Seasons Including ‘The Good Wife,’ ‘NCIS: Los Angeles,’ More

CHICAGO – We have written several times about the strength of the 2009-2010 television season with an incredible number of rookie hits and many of those great programs are now coming out on DVD.

Blu-Ray Review: Sixth Season of FOX Hit ‘House’ With Hugh Laurie

House: Season Six

CHICAGO – With the departure of Adrian Monk (“Monk”), Jack Bauer (“24”) and Jack Shephard (“Lost”) along with the stoppage of the revolving door of personalities at “Law & Order,” there are very few time-tested icons left on television. One of the remaining TV characters that will clearly have a chapter of his own in the history books of the medium is Dr. Gregory House (Hugh Laurie) and his stellar sixth season of the FOX medical drama was recently released in an excellent Universal set.

Blu-Ray Review: Great Release For ‘George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead’

Survival of the Dead

CHICAGO – It pains me to point out the flaws of “George A. Romero’s Survival of the Dead.” Two of the most influential movies in my entire life are “Night of the Living Dead” and “Dawn of the Dead” and I could write a book on the importance of one of the most essential horror directors of all time. But, despite a fantastic Blu-ray release, “Survival of the Dead” disappoints.

Going the Distance: Top 10 Real-Life On-Screen Couples

CHICAGO – The personal life of an entertainer shouldn’t be of any entertainment value, regardless of how celebrity gossip columns and the paparazzi would like to convince the general public otherwise. Who cares if two famous people have chemistry if it doesn’t show up onscreen?

Film Review: George Clooney Does it Italian Style in ‘The American’

CHICAGO – What if the most dangerous and pursued assassin in the world began to develop a flaw in his delivery, due to the vulnerability of simple human contact? Where does religion, carnality and love fit in that connection? George Clooney plays that assassin-type in “The American,” holed up for one more job, the job that might answer both of those questions.

DVD Review: Fine Cast Adds Substance to Contrived ‘City Island’

City Island DVD

CHICAGO – There are many reasons why “City Island” shouldn’t work. It’s entirely contrived, from one end of the script to the other. Every gargantuan misunderstanding in the film has been spawned by festering lies, the kind that sitcoms have thrived on since the beginning of television. Yet what works in a 23-minute TV sketch often becomes tedious and exasperating when stretched to feature length.
