Ashton Kutcher, Natalie Portman With ‘No Strings Attached’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on January 21, 2011 - 2:06pmRating: 3.5/5.0 |
CHICAGO – When a handsome studmuffin meets a fetching, fabulously hot doctor, what’s the outcome? That’s right, sex without a relationship, AKA Friends with Benefits. And a movie featuring Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman called “No Strings Attached.”
Blu-Ray Review: Lost Masterpiece ‘Army of Shadows’ Makes Criterion HD Debut
Submitted by BrianTT on January 21, 2011 - 1:02pmCHICAGO – Imagine working on the most ambitious, personal artistic endeavor of your life only to watch the most unusual circumstances of fate tear it away from the public eye. Such was the case with 1969’s excellent “Army of Shadows,” a film that took 37 years to find an audience stateside. Released in U.S. theaters for the first time in 2006, Jean-Pierre Melville’s fascinating tale of the French Resistance has now been given the Criterion Blu-ray upgrade and firmly stands as the excellent piece of work that it should have been recognized as for the last several decades.
Film Review: Ben Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones Are ‘The Company Men’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on January 21, 2011 - 11:37amCHICAGO – Dealing with an overall economic downturn, as the world is still experiencing, becomes the story of the individual. The frustration and insecurity that develops in a long dry spell is poignantly rendered in writer/director John Well’s “The Company Men.” Ben Affleck joins Oscar winners Tommy Lee Jones, Chris Cooper and Kevin Costner in telling the story.

TV Review: ‘Spartacus: Gods of the Arena’ Delivers Bloody Goods
Submitted by BrianTT on January 21, 2011 - 9:50amCHICAGO – It’s mere minutes into “Spartacus: Gods the Arena” before men are being decapitated and women are flashing their breasts. With all the self-serious junk on right now, it’s nice to have Starz’s biggest hit back.
DVD Review: Philip Seymour Hoffman Directs ‘Jack Goes Boating’
Submitted by mattmovieman on January 21, 2011 - 8:46amCHICAGO – There are few character actors in the history of cinema more mesmerizing and fearless than Philip Seymour Hoffman. He’s created some of the most memorable characters ever to grace the screen: from the sexually arrested Allen in “Happiness” and the obsessed playwright Caden Cotard in “Synecdoche, New York” to the electrifying title role in “Capote.”
Blu-Ray Review: Classic ‘Once Upon a Time in America’ With Robert De Niro
Submitted by BrianTT on January 20, 2011 - 7:19pmCHICAGO – The entertainment machine often turns in an unusual way that allows for a wave of material featuring the same star in the same month. Just as Robert De Niro was preparing his odd speech for the Golden Globe Awards, two of his most beloved films were being released on Blu-ray in “Raging Bull” and “Once Upon a Time in America,” while one of his 2010 works in “Stone” was about to hit the market as well. January 2011 is De Niro month. Sadly, while the “Raging Bull” Blu-ray is a gorgeous must-own, “Once Upon a Time in America” is merely satisfactory. The film is still strong but the release is nothing special.
Interview: Director Richard J. Lewis on His Side of ‘Barney’s Version’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on January 20, 2011 - 6:12pmCHICAGO – Working with high level actors such as Paul Giamatti and Dustin Hoffman didn’t faze director Richard J. Lewis. He had pursued the film version of the Mordecai Richler’s novel “Barney’s Version” for several years, and it was his direction that recently got Giamatti (as Barney) the Golden Globe Award.
TV Review: ‘Perfect Couples’ is Adequate But Far From Perfect
Submitted by BrianTT on January 20, 2011 - 1:33pmCHICAGO – Since practically the beginning of TV, sitcoms about the trials of being in a couple are a dime a dozen. Today it takes innovative, highly intelligent writing to make the mundane, everyday challenges of being in a relationship seem exciting and—most importantly—watchable, week after week.
TV Review: Save This Show! ‘Parks and Recreation’ Seeks a Second Chance
Submitted by BrianTT on January 20, 2011 - 1:26pmCHICAGO – The midseason premiere of season three of “Parks & Recreation” starts by catching us up on what we’ve missed. It details the arrivals of auditors, the “black hats,” played by the non-descript Adam Scott and a goofily-exuberant Rob Lowe, and features a tongue-and-cheek detailing of the budget crisis facing the parks department.
Blu-Ray Review: ‘Robinson Crusoe on Mars’ Monkeys With Sci-Fi Genre
Submitted by mattmovieman on January 20, 2011 - 12:46pmCHICAGO – A fascinating B-movie gem from 1964, “Robinson Crusoe on Mars” gives modern viewers an idea of what America’s collective imagination (concerning space travel) looked like during that brief moment in time. As an entertainment, it’s hokey and creaky beyond belief, but as a cinematic time capsule, it’s quite a trip.
TV Review: USA’s New ‘Fairly Legal’ Works Due to Charming Lead
Submitted by BrianTT on January 20, 2011 - 12:29pmCHICAGO – The second wacky legal show debut of the week (after NBC’s awful “Harry’s Law”) is the fairly good “Fairly Legal,” a show that works largely due to the incredible charm of its lead, Sarah Shahi (“Life”).
Film News: Anne Hathaway, Tom Hardy Join ‘The Dark Knight Rises’
Submitted by mattmovieman on January 19, 2011 - 7:13pmCHICAGO – The Batcave is buzzing about the two new cast members confirmed for “The Dark Knight Rises,” the third installment in Christopher Nolan’s phenomenally successful reboot of the Batman franchise.
TV Review: Mid-Season Premiere of ‘Royal Pains’ Offers Great Escape
Submitted by BrianTT on January 19, 2011 - 6:09pmCHICAGO – USA’s “Royal Pains” follows the same, odd season structure as the network’s “White Collar,” which returned earlier this week to USA to pick up where it left off in its second season.
Interview: Director John Wells is Hired For ‘The Company Men’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on January 19, 2011 - 1:04pmCHICAGO – John Wells is a familiar name to televisions fans. As executive producer of “ER” and “The West Wing,” his combination of drama and humanity has left a mark in TV’s evolution for nearly a generation.
Blu-Ray Review: ‘Buried’ With Ryan Reynolds Benefits From Own Limitations
Submitted by mattmovieman on January 19, 2011 - 11:14amCHICAGO – Many films have attempted to portray the unimaginably terrifying experience of being buried alive, from George Sluizer’s bone-chillingly bleak thriller, “The Vanishing,” to Quentin Tarantino’s crowd-pleaser, “Kill Bill Vol. 2.” Yet Rodrigo Cortés’ “Buried” is the first film in cinema history to take place entirely within the rectangular confines of a coffin.
TV Review: Generic ‘Retired at 35’ Has Few Laughs
Submitted by BrianTT on January 19, 2011 - 10:04amCHICAGO – Has television become so repetitive that it copies itself only four months after the fact? Of course, TV Land’s “Retired at 35,” a new hump day companion for the network’s hit “Hot in Cleveland,” must have been in some sort of production before CBS’s “Sh*t My Dad Says” but they are so similar that one could be forgiven for mistaking the two. And the bigger problem is that neither of them are all that funny.
Blu-Ray Review: 30th Anniversary Edition of Martin Scorsese’s Timeless ‘Raging Bull’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 18, 2011 - 6:00pmCHICAGO – After Robert De Niro’s “Pupkin”-esque acceptance speech on Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards, some of our younger readers may be curious about some of the films that got him to that awkward moment. His second Oscar came for what is undeniably one of the best performances of all time. De Niro would give at least a dozen great performances, some before and some after, but “Raging Bull,” recently released in a beautiful 30th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray, is the peak of one of the most notable acting careers in film history.
Video Game Review: Inspiring, Creative World of Sony’s ‘Little Big Planet 2’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 18, 2011 - 3:23pmCHICAGO – The first quarter of 2010 was the best of the calendar in the world of video games with stunning titles like “Mass Effect 2,” “Battlefield: Bad Company 2” and “Heavy Rain”.
DVD Review: Patrick Stewart Delivers Towering Portrayal of ‘Macbeth’
Submitted by mattmovieman on January 18, 2011 - 11:34amCHICAGO – There are few things more excruciating to sit through than a botched adaptation of Shakespeare. The Bard’s language is so intricately textured and poetically structured that it must be fully understood in order to be adequately delivered. An audacious mess like Baz Luhrmann’s “Romeo and Juliet” recalls memories of amateur high school productions where students raced through the dialogue in order to sound naturalistic.
TV Review: Mid-Season Premiere of USA’s Clever Hit ‘White Collar’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 18, 2011 - 10:55amCHICAGO – The USA network, like TNT, has adopted an unusual launch pattern for some of their shows, dividing their seasons in two. So, while “Royal Pains” and “Burn Notice” had their second season premieres last summer, they now return for the second half of their sophomore chapters.
Interview: Katie Aselton Makes Her Directorial Debut With ‘The Freebie’
Submitted by mattmovieman on January 17, 2011 - 1:47pmCHICAGO – Few couples have made as indelible an impression on the modern independent film scene as Mark Duplass and Katie Aselton. Best known for their breakout work in 2005’s “The Puffy Chair,” the two actors-turned-filmmakers have forged a variety of collaborations, most recently in the FX sitcom, “The League.”
TV Review: Kathy Bates, David E. Kelley Team For NBC’s ‘Harry’s Law’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 17, 2011 - 8:33amCHICAGO – David E. Kelley (“The Practice,” “Boston Legal”) is a fantastic TV writer. Kathy Bates (“Misery,” “About Schmidt”) is a versatile actress.
Entertainment News: ‘The Social Network,’ ‘The Kids Are All Right’ Among Winners at 68th Golden Globes
Submitted by PatrickMcD on January 16, 2011 - 11:50pmCHICAGO – Two 2010 films, “The Social Network” and “The Kids Are All Right,” plus TV’s “Glee” and “Boardwalk Empire” were multiple winners at the 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards.
Film Review: ‘The Green Hornet’ Overly Limelights a Cavalier But Thrilling Seth Rogen
Submitted by HollywoodChicago.com on January 15, 2011 - 7:12pmCHICAGO – “The Green Hornet,” which could have been titled “The Seth Rogen Show,” is an uneven mix between a stroke of comic book genius and a self-righteous attempt at being both comedy and drama.
‘The Green Hornet’ Overly Limelights a Cavalier But Thrilling Seth Rogen
Submitted by HollywoodChicago.com on January 15, 2011 - 6:09pmRating: 2.5/5.0 |
CHICAGO – “The Green Hornet,” which could have been titled “The Seth Rogen Show,” is an uneven mix between a stroke of comic book genius and a self-righteous attempt at being both comedy and drama. The untidy story is wrapped inside a messy box that’s a portion of what it successfully is and what it should have been.
TV Review: Stunning Premiere of ‘Big Love’ Returns Show to Prime Form
Submitted by BrianTT on January 15, 2011 - 11:33amCHICAGO – As the credits for the premiere of the fifth and final season of “Big Love” started, I wondered exactly what I wanted from this year. Like Chloe Sevigny and most fans of the show, I agreed that season four was a serious disappointment, especially after the spectacular third outing.

Film Review: Mesmerizing Beauty of Sylvain Chomet’s Gorgeous ‘The Illusionist’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 14, 2011 - 12:09pmRating: 5.0/5.0 |
CHICAGO – Presuming the Academy makes the logical choices, the competition for the Oscar for 2010’s Best Animated Film should feature three of the best films of the medium in many years – “Toy Story 3,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” and the least-heralded of the three, the beautiful “The Illusionist.”
