Mesmerizing Beauty of Sylvain Chomet’s Gorgeous ‘The Illusionist’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 14, 2011 - 12:04pmRating: 5.0/5.0 |
CHICAGO – Presuming the Academy makes the logical choices, the competition for the Oscar for 2010’s Best Animated Film should feature three of the best films of the medium in many years – “Toy Story 3,” “How to Train Your Dragon,” and the least-heralded of the three, the beautiful “The Illusionist.”
Film Review: Vince Vaughn, Kevin James Seek Trust in ‘The Dilemma’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on January 14, 2011 - 10:26amCHICAGO – In many ways, “The Dilemma” is director Ron Howard’s most daring film. Leaving behind the usual brightly lit, good/evil morality tales, Howard weaves a narrative basket filled with infidelity, gambling addiction, blackmail and mistrust.

CHICAGO – In many ways, “The Dilemma” is director Ron Howard’s most daring film. Leaving behind the usual brightly lit, good/evil morality tales, Howard weaves a narrative basket filled with infidelity, gambling addiction, blackmail and mistrust. This is Opie on the dark side, with Vince Vaughn and Kevin James along for the journey.
Film Review: Mike Leigh Finds Heartbreak in Humanity of ‘Another Year’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 14, 2011 - 10:17amRating: 4.0/5.0 |
CHICAGO – Mike Leigh (“Happy-Go-Lucky,” “Vera Drake”) has long ago been correctly-labeled as one of our most remarkably-attuned writer/directors when it comes to capturing the tragedy of the everyday human condition on film. His latest work, “Another Year,” may seem like just another slice of life and it’s certainly not the drama to see if you need fancy hooks with your popcorn, but realistically presenting the highs and sadness of an unfulfilled life is much harder than it looks.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Piranha’ Gives Viewers Skin, Gore They Should Expect
Submitted by BrianTT on January 13, 2011 - 9:53pmCHICAGO – “Piranha” is ludicrous, offensive, disgusting, gratuitous, and stupid — just the way that it should be. Can you imagine the complete failure it would have been to try and take the concept of killer fish seriously? Director Alexandre Aja (“High Tension”) wisely went the other way and made a movie that falls completely flat in terms of character, dialogue, and logic but works where it needs to: T, A, and gore.
DVD Review: Talented Cast Deserves Better Than ‘Hot in Cleveland’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 13, 2011 - 9:02pmCHICAGO – Who would have guessed that the network to jump on the Betty White phenomenon (and who would have guessed that would ever be a viable phrase) would be TV Land? It makes a certain kind of twisted sense that a sitcom featuring stars who made it big on other shows would reunite on network built around reruns but “Hot in Cleveland” should have and could have been much better and one wonders if it wasn’t fate but that no one else would have this lackluster comedy.
Interview: Indie Filmmaker Joe Maggio Cooks Up ‘Bitter Feast’
Submitted by mattmovieman on January 13, 2011 - 12:07pmCHICAGO – New York filmmaker Joe Maggio is fascinated by the pursuit of redemption, particularly in stories featuring characters who may not entirely be worthy of it. His 2001 debut feature “Virgil Bliss” followed a man fresh out of prison as he attempted to build a new life. Maggio’s 2008 drama “Paper Covers Rock” told the story of a suicidal mother who fights to maintain custody of her daughter.
Video Game Feature: The 10 Best Games of 2010
Submitted by BrianTT on January 13, 2011 - 11:42amCHICAGO – We may be a little late to the wrap-up of the 2010 video game party, but there’s still time to take one final look back at the year that was before we get (more) addicted to “Little Big Planet 2” and “Dead Space 2.” What were the outstanding titles of the last twelve months? And what games will you still be playing in 2011? Chances are, these are the ten titles that won’t be leaving your console anytime soon.
Interview: Vince Vaughn, Ron Howard, Winona Ryder, Jennifer Connelly, Channing Tatum of ‘The Dilemma’
Submitted by HollywoodChicago.com on January 12, 2011 - 6:45pmCHICAGO – After a 12-year hiatus from comedy (his last was “Edtv” in 1999), the legendary (and typically dramatic) director Ron Howard is back to crack you up with “The Dilemma”.
DVD Review: Hysterical Animation of HBO’s ‘The Ricky Gervais Show’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 12, 2011 - 3:36pmCHICAGO – Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant are two of the funniest men alive. Their work on “The Office” and “Extras” stills stands up as brilliant, clever, and consistently hysterical. Their quick wit made them a perfect fit for the world of the podcast and it’s simply spectacular that they hold the Guinness title for the most-downloaded audio recordings. The smash hit podcasts have been turned into an animated HBO series, returning to the network on Friday, January 14th, 2011, shortly after the DVD release of the first season.

The film was directed by Michel Gondry. It will be released on January 14th, 2011.
Blu-Ray Review: ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Season 8 Motion Comic’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 12, 2011 - 1:40pmCHICAGO – As the weeks, months, and years make it clearer that we will never get a live-action continuation of one of the best television programs ever, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” (it’s just cruel that there are two “Sex and the City” movies and we can’t even get a “Buffy” reunion special), fans of the franchise are forced to turn to alternate advancements in the universe, such as the Dark Horse Comics series. The very-popular and critically-acclaimed comics have been turned into Motion Comics and released in a 2-disc Blu-ray set with mixed results.
TV Review: ABC’s ‘Off the Map’ Follows Well-Trodden Formula
Submitted by mattmovieman on January 12, 2011 - 8:45amCHICAGO – Regardless of its exotic locales, “Off the Map” may benefit from a few more diversions. Everything about this fresh-faced ABC drama feels instantly familiar.
Blu-Ray Review: Robert Rodriguez’s ‘Machete’ With Jessica Alba, Robert De Niro
Submitted by BrianTT on January 11, 2011 - 9:32pmCHICAGO – “Machete” may be one of the most wonderfully-conceived films of 2010. The idea that one of the fake trailers from “Grindhouse” could ever become a full-length film is a movie lover’s dream come true (and it’s so ironic that “Machete” grossed more domestically than the movie that spawned it). While I love the very existence of “Machete,” the movie itself is something of a disappointment, and it’s not helped by a mediocre Blu-ray that barely has any special features.
Blu-Ray Review: Riveting ‘The Last Exorcism’ Gets Great HD Release
Submitted by BrianTT on January 11, 2011 - 8:31pmCHICAGO – Lionsgate may have somewhat poisoned the horror genre by milking every drop of financial blood from the “Saw” franchise but they are still easily one of the best studios out there in terms of Blu-ray product for those who love their movies scary.

TV News: FOX Renews ‘Raising Hope’ For Second Season
Submitted by BrianTT on January 11, 2011 - 12:04pmCHICAGO – After a few misfires recently, FOX seems to have found a program to be proud of in the promising sitcom “Raising Hope,” which they announced today will be renewed for the 2011-12 season. The Tuesday night program airs at 8pm CST.
TV Review: FX Boxing Drama ‘Lights Out’ Balances Cliché With Character
Submitted by BrianTT on January 11, 2011 - 11:48amCHICAGO – What happens after the final bell rings in the life of a boxer? FX’s drama centers around a character who goes from having a bloody cut above his eye sewn shut to making breakfast for his daughters within the first few scenes.
TV News: ABC Announces Early Pick-Ups Including ‘Castle,’ ‘Modern Family’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 10, 2011 - 10:43pmCHICAGO – Fans of ABC’s often-struggling “Cougar Town” had to wait until the eleventh hour last year to find out that their favorite show would be given a second chance with a sophomore season. Not so this year. In a surprising move, “Cougar Town” got the nod for an early pick-up for the 2011-12 season. Less surprising were the also-announced renewals of “Castle,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Middle,” “Modern Family,” and “Private Practice.”
Blu-Ray Review: ‘El Mariachi,’ ‘Desperado,’ ‘Once Upon a Time in Mexico’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 10, 2011 - 10:21pmCHICAGO – Timed to coincide with Fox’s release of “Machete,” Sony has released three of director Robert Rodriguez’s earlier action extravaganzas on two releases — a double feature of “El Mariachi” and “Desperado” to sit next to your new copy of “Once Upon a Time in Mexico.” Both releases feature more special features and arguably better HD transfers than Rodriguez’s 2010 film and could be the better choice for your Blu-ray dollar than “Machete.”
Blu-Ray Review: Boring ‘Resident Evil: Afterlife’ Falls Flat in 2D
Submitted by BrianTT on January 10, 2011 - 9:31pmCHICAGO – Despite the exhaustion most of us have with the 3D trend by now, if there’s any franchise that should have benefited from the 3D rollercoaster, it would be the one based on “Resident Evil.” Zombies and Milla in 3D?!? Sign me up. And I wasn’t alone as the film made a stunning $300 million worldwide (more than double any other film in the franchise). Sadly, the traditional Blu-ray proves that 3D was the main reason for not just the film’s success but its very existence. It doesn’t work without it.
Slideshow: 5-Image Gallery of Rachael Ray at Chicago Book Event
Submitted by PatrickMcD on January 10, 2011 - 9:21pmCHICAGO – Despite having a popular talk show and continuing her reign as one of America’s favorite TV cooks, Rachael Ray still has time for charity, as demonstrated in this HollywoodChicago.com slideshow at her book signing last month at Barnes & Noble in suburban Oakbrook, Illinois.
In Memoriam: Peter Yates, Director of ‘Bullitt,' 'Breaking Away'
Submitted by PatrickMcD on January 10, 2011 - 8:17pmCHICAGO – On the stadium set of “Breaking Away,” during the 1978 filming of the climatic bike race sequence, an extra ran up to director Peter Yates and handed him a cold beer. The filmmaker raised it high, and lustily took a drink.
TV Review: William H. Macy, Emmy Rossum Save Troubled ‘Shameless’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 9, 2011 - 1:56pmCHICAGO – Showtime has built a critical and award-winning reputation around strong lead characters for some of our most best TV actors: Michael C. Hall in “Dexter,” Edie Falco in “Nurse Jackie,” Mary-Louise Parker in “Weeds,” Laura Linney in “The Big C,” and Toni Collette in “United States of Tara” are only a few examples.
TV Review: ‘Episodes’ Sublimely Synthesizes American, British Humor
Submitted by mattmovieman on January 9, 2011 - 1:43amCHICAGO – In the annals of showbiz-skewering shows about shows, few of them have been as funny right off the bat as “Episodes.” This Showtime/BBC co-production is blessed with one of the best premises of the season, and as evidenced in its first three episodes, the premise only gets funnier as the story progresses, reaching new heights of lunacy.
TV Review: ‘Bob’s Burgers’ Serves Up Laughs on FOX Sunday
Submitted by PatrickMcD on January 8, 2011 - 3:35pmCHICAGO – TV animation continues to reign on FOX Sunday nights, and the newest addition is “Bob’s Burgers,” premiering January 9th at 8:30pm ET/7:30pm CT. “Burgers” is created by Loren Bouchard, known for “Dr. Katz” and “Home Movies.”
Red-Carpet Slideshow: ‘The Dilemma’ Stars Vince Vaughn, Kevin James, Winona Ryder, Jennifer Connelly
Submitted by HollywoodChicago.com on January 8, 2011 - 4:02am
CHICAGO – The world premiere of the new Chicago-filmed dramedy “The Dilemma” was shown in Chicago on Thursday following a red carpet with stars Vince Vaughn, Kevin James, Winona Ryder, Jennifer Connelly, Channing Tatum, Amy Morton and Chelcie Ross.
TV Review: Self-Serious ‘The Cape’ Misses Attempt at New ‘Heroes’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 7, 2011 - 4:10pmCHICAGO – NBC never learns. After not just countless rip-offs but “Heroes” itself tanked, why would they try to go back to a clearly-drained well for another comic book TV series like “The Cape”?
Blu-Ray Review: Oliver Stone’s ‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 7, 2011 - 2:15pmCHICAGO – Remember when every Oliver Stone movie caused waves? There was a time when he was a love-him-or-hate-him director who provoked conversation with every outing. Perhaps the most interesting thing about his recent work like “World Trade Center” and “Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps,” recently released on Blu-ray and DVD, is how little impact it has had. He seems to be making movies most people like but no one loves or hates. The sequel to one of his best films is a good drama but doesn’t really resonate like the man used to do every time out.
