Film Review: Ryan Gosling, Michelle Williams Are Heartbreakingly Real in ‘Blue Valentine’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 7, 2011 - 12:11pmRating: 5.0/5.0 |
CHICAGO – Derek Cianfrance’s “Blue Valentine,” my pick last month for the 9th best film of 2010, is a devastatingly genuine representation of the first and final chapters of a marriage. It is a powerful drama, partially made so by a fantastic script, but mostly due to two of the best performances of the year from Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams. Don’t miss it.

Film Review: Melodrama Weakens Gwyneth Paltrow in ‘Country Strong’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on January 7, 2011 - 9:10amCHICAGO – Modern country music is actually quite fascinating. Whereas in the classic days of the 1950s to ‘70s, when it was a cult stepchild of popular music, now it occupies the rarified heights of the Justins and Taylors. That is why “Country Strong,” starring Gwyneth Paltrow, is so annoying. It doesn’t even try to be modern.

Blu-Ray Review: James Franco Rocks in Intriguing if Flawed ‘Howl’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 6, 2011 - 1:43pmCHICAGO – James Franco gave a riveting performance in Danny Boyle’s “127 Hours” that is likely to earn one of the best actors of his generation an Academy Award nomination in a few weeks, but it wasn’t his only stellar turn in 2010. He also thoroughly delivered as the legendary poet Allen Ginsberg in the hybrid “Howl,” a film that’s part poem, part courtroom drama, and part history lesson. It doesn’t always come together but it’s worth seeing just for Franco’s work and the strength of the source material alone.
Interview: Jane Seymour Goes Beyond Dr. Quinn to ‘Perfectly Prudence’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on January 6, 2011 - 1:21pmCHICAGO – Jane Seymour is a memorable beauty, and has found success in virtually all areas of the media. After breaking through with films such as “Live and Let Die” and “Somewhere in Time,” she was “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman” for six seasons on TV. She returns with “Perfectly Prudence” on the Hallmark channel.
TV Feature: 10 Best Shows of 2010
Submitted by BrianTT on January 6, 2011 - 12:25pmCHICAGO – Television may no longer be in the golden age of the late ’90s and early ’00s, but the diversity of the current landscape has produced a few notable gems.
Blu-Ray Review: ‘Case 39’ Definitely Should Have Stayed Closed
Submitted by mattmovieman on January 6, 2011 - 8:34amCHICAGO – Some films invite instant parodies before they’re even released. Jodie Foster’s ill-advised Mel Gibson vehicle, “The Beaver,” is one of them. Christian Alvart’s long-buried Renée Zellweger vehicle “Case 39” is another. The film’s tagline reads, “Some cases should never be reopened,” which inspires the obvious (and defensible) retort, “Some films should never be released.”
2011 Summit Picture Preview: ‘Drive Angry 3D,’ ‘Source Code,’ More
Submitted by BrianTT on January 5, 2011 - 11:14pmCHICAGO – Summit Entertainment sent over four images highlighting their 2011 slate including images from “Drive Angry 3D,” “The Beaver,” “Source Code,” and “The Three Musketeers 3D,” along with synopsis and release date information for the rest of their slate, including “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.”
Blu-Ray Review: Controversial ‘Catfish’ Examines Identity in the Internet Age
Submitted by BrianTT on January 5, 2011 - 11:38amCHICAGO – It almost felt like Universal tried to piggyback “Catfish,” recently released on Blu-ray and DVD, on to so many other movies that it somewhat tanked at the box office (not breaking even $4 million) because it lost its own identity; ironic, given the film’s purported examination of the shifting ground of truth known as the internet.
Blu-Ray Review: ‘Lost in Translation’ Hits HD to Coincide With Release of ‘Somewhere’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 5, 2011 - 11:35amCHICAGO – As Sofia Coppola’s excellent “Somewhere” with Stephen Dorff and Elle Fanning begins to roll out across the country (read our review), catch up with Coppola’s best film, one of the best of the ’00s, the great “Lost in Translation,” now available on Blu-ray for the first time. The release is mostly just a tie-in with a filmmaker’s current release but there is a new special feature — basically a commercial for “Somewhere.” It’s not a fantastic “special edition” but it’s still a fantastic movie.
Interview: Patrick Fabian Conducts ‘The Last Exorcism’
Submitted by mattmovieman on January 5, 2011 - 8:41amCHICAGO – His face is inviting, but his intentions are ambiguous and perhaps somewhat devious. That’s precisely the type of character that Patrick Fabian has mastered. He’s lent disarming charisma to a variety of characters, from the self-righteously scheming man of faith in “Big Love” to the flamboyantly sleazy car company executive in “Pushing Daisies.”

Film News: Will Chicago Make ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ Cut as Third Filming City?
Submitted by HollywoodChicago.com on January 4, 2011 - 4:06pmCHICAGO – With shooting expected to begin in May 2011 for “The Dark Knight Rises,” Warner Bros. is currently busy scouting filming locations. While rumors have been running rampant for the last six months about which cities make the lucky cut, we now have two confirmed: Los Angeles and somewhere in the United Kingdom.
TV Review: ‘V’ Gains Momentum, Lacks Urgency in Second Season
Submitted by BrianTT on January 4, 2011 - 2:33pmCHICAGO – Here’s the sort of self-important primetime drama that tries so hard to be a bona fide event that it quickly grows irrelevant.
Interviews: Bond Girls Do it Better at Hollywood Celebrities Show
Submitted by PatrickMcD on January 4, 2011 - 11:41amCHICAGO – The James Bond legend lives on, with Daniel Craig currently holding the reins of that character. Giving aid and comfort to the man with the golden gun are the so-called “Bond Girls.” Britt Ekland, Maud Adams and Lana Wood were part of that exclusive girl club.
Blu-Ray Review: ‘Battlestar Galactica: Season Four’ Finally Closes HD Chapter
Submitted by BrianTT on January 4, 2011 - 11:03amCHICAGO – The high-def releases for “Battlestar Galactica” have been somewhat baffling. The problem for Universal was that A.) They had started releasing the series on standard-def when Blu-ray took off and B.) They needed a way to milk one of their most impressive cash cows for a bit longer. Consequently, the chance to individually buy all of one of the best science fiction programs of all time didn’t come until 2011. But that day has finally arrived with the release of the impressive “Battlestar Galactica: Season Four.”
Blu-Ray Review: Mediocre ‘Dinner For Schmucks’ With Paul Rudd, Steve Carell
Submitted by BrianTT on January 4, 2011 - 10:05amCHICAGO – “Dinner For Schmucks” proves that casting does not make a comedy. Steve Carell and Paul Rudd are easily two of the funniest people alive. They have perfect comic timing. Although you’d never know it from watching them go through the unfunny motions in this lackluster effort.
2011 Warner Bros. Picture Preview: ‘Green Lantern,’ ‘Sherlock Holmes 2,’ ‘The Hangover Part II,’ More
Submitted by BrianTT on January 3, 2011 - 9:43pmCHICAGO – Warner Brothers has released a slate of images from a large portion of their 2011 schedule of films, including “The Rite,” “Unknown,” “Hall Pass,” “Red Riding Hood,” “Sucker Punch,” “Arthur,” “Something Borrowed,” “The Hangover Part II,” “Green Lantern,” “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2,” “Crazy Stupid Love,” “Horrible Bosses,” “Final Destination 5,” “The Apparition,” “Dolphin Tale,” and “Sherlock Holmes II.”
Video Game Review: ‘Battlefield: Bad Company 2: Vietnam’ Offers Amazing New Shooter Maps
Submitted by BrianTT on January 3, 2011 - 3:41pmCHICAGO – “Battlefield: Bad Company 2: Vietnam” is the best multiplayer DLC ever released. With some of the best-designed maps, period, DLC or disc-based, along with new weapons, vehicles, trophies, and even music, this is simply a must-download release. Even if you haven’t picked up “BBC2” in months and have departed its world for that of “Call of Duty: Black Ops,” this amazing release will suck you back in.
TV Review: Excellent ‘Southland’ Returns With First New TNT Episodes
Submitted by BrianTT on January 3, 2011 - 10:20amCHICAGO – TNT’s “Southland” has found that rare balance that evades most modern cop shows. In fact, it may be the best show of its type since “NYPD Blue.”
Blu-Ray Review: Meditative, Excellent ‘The American’ With George Clooney
Submitted by BrianTT on January 3, 2011 - 10:14amCHICAGO – A movie that comes closer to the lyrical and meditative style of Michelangelo Antonioni than any other in years, Anton Corbijn’s “The American,” now on Blu-ray and DVD, is a nearly-brilliant drama that found a respectable audience in theaters even if it wasn’t quite the right one.
DVD Review: Ridiculous Yet Fascinating ‘Jersey Shore Uncensored: Season Two’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 3, 2011 - 10:09amCHICAGO – There’s something about “Jersey Shore” that makes it unbelievably watchable. I’ll never understand why people have taken to the oversaturated “Real Housewives” franchise or the draw of “Hoarders,” but I totally get “Jersey Shore.” It’s difficult not to be entertained by personalities this larger-than-life and the bonus is that they feel as close to real as reality television has been in years. “Jersey Shore” never seems nearly as scripted as “The Hills,” reminding viewers of my generation of the “Real World” dramatics of the show’s first few years — back when it felt, you know, real.
Blu-Ray Review: Drew Barrymore, Justin Long in Effective ‘Going the Distance’
Submitted by BrianTT on January 3, 2011 - 10:05amCHICAGO – It’s far from a perfect comedy but considering the amazingly-broken state of the romantic comedy genre, the wasteland of horrendous films that have continued to give talentless stars like Katherine Heigl a career, “Going the Distance,” recently released on Blu-ray and DVD, is a surprisingly-effective flick. A somewhat-bizarre blend of “dude humor” with typical genre cliches may turn some viewers off but this flick is two things most romantic comedies aren’t — romantic and funny.
Exclusive Portrait: Denny Laine, Denny Seiwell of Rock Band Wings
Submitted by PatrickMcD on January 3, 2011 - 1:36amCHICAGO – Paul McCartney’s second band, begun in 1971, was called “Wings,” and throughout the 1970s scored big hits with “Band on the Run,” “Live and Let Die” and “With a Little Luck.” Denny Seiwell was Wings first drummer, and guitarist Denny Laine joined the band on their first album, “Wild Life.”
Interviews: Director John McNaughton, Two Actresses at Best of the Midwest Awards
Submitted by PatrickMcD on January 3, 2011 - 12:50amCHICAGO – Early last month, the Midwest Independent Film Festival had their year-end “Best of the Midwest” Awards, honoring their showcase films throughout the 2010 calendar year. Director John Naughton and two actresses – Elizabeth Laidlaw and Erica Lynn Schmeck – were interviewed during the event.
Exclusive Portrait: Ricky Martin is ‘Livin’ La Vida Satisfied’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on January 2, 2011 - 2:28pmCHICAGO – Ricky Martin had quite the 2010. The pop sensation who placed “Livin’ La Vida Loco” into our collective consciousness also publicly acknowledged being gay in March. This led to the publication of his new book, “Me” (“Yo” in Spanish), and an appearance at Borders Books Lincoln Park in Chicago.
