Film Review: Mind-Blowing ‘Midsommar’ is Disturbing and Beautiful
Submitted by PatrickMcD on July 4, 2019 - 11:31amCHICAGO – “Midsommar” is beautifully composed, disturbing in nature and very very Swedish. Writer/Director Art Aster creates a stunning sophomore effort (after his brilliant debut “Hereditary”) that is pure cinema, and weaves a fantastical tale of humanity stripped to its bare bones. It moves a bit slow, but it also builds to something completely original and unexpected.
Film Review: ‘Maze Runner: The Death Cure’ Has Run Out of Life
Submitted by PatrickMcD on January 26, 2018 - 12:35pmCHICAGO – The third part of the “Maze Runner” trilogy is called “The Death Cure,” and that cure best describes the faint pulse of this run-out-of-steam dystopia aimed at “young adults.” It is mostly warring and not much more, except for a stab (literally) at misplaced emotion.

Film Review: ‘Detroit’ is Stark, Blunt & Honest U.S. History
Submitted by PatrickMcD on July 28, 2017 - 10:37amCHICAGO – It has become clear to anyone who is making an observation about authority and “order” in America, that for certain people it comes with a severe price. “Detroit” explores an incident within the 1967 riots there, when white police officers raided a hotel and perpetuated crimes of their own.

Film Review: ‘The Maze Runner’ a Cut Above Teenage Dystopia Genre
Submitted by PatrickMcD on September 19, 2014 - 9:42amCHICAGO – Yes, the future world of teenage bleakness, so popular in “The Hunger Games” and “Divergent,” now has its own genre. “The Maze Runner” is an excellent entry, and gets over its stilted dialogue and scary monsters by adding in surprises and atmospheric mystery.
Interview: Young Actors Seek Their Reward in ‘The Maze Runner’
Submitted by PatrickMcD on September 18, 2014 - 12:51pmCHICAGO – What is wrong with our future? The Young Adult category of future fiction seems to think we’re all doomed, what with “The Hunger Games,” “Divergent” and now “The Maze Runner” film adaptations. The latest “Maze” take is pretty darn good, though, thanks to actors Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario and Will Poulter.

Film Review: Horrible ‘We’re the Millers’ Wastes Huge Potential
Submitted by PatrickMcD on August 7, 2013 - 4:19pmCHICAGO – There was a point in “We’re the Millers” when the story fell off the table like a Slinky from a mountaintop. It’s as if other writers took over from a far superior dark comedy, and injected “heart” and middle age “stripping.” This all adds up to a difficult 110 minutes of lost life time.
Blu-Ray Review: ‘The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader’
Submitted by BrianTT on April 20, 2011 - 10:50amCHICAGO – “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” is a well-intentioned blockbuster, a morally and spiritually strong piece about heroism and believing in yourself that bursts at the seams with the kind of striking visual imagery that keeps the little ones entertained long enough for them to possibly even learn something. It’s far from a great film as it drags and meanders to nearly two hours and contains a few awkward child performances, but it looks stunning on Blu-ray and Fox has put together another solid family offering for clans with HD capability.
